hi all, here is a little old panaplex clock i found in a thrift shop
for $5 it had a worn out hour display that i replaced by desoldering
with copper braid and just put i a new one and disturbed it as little
as possible, the motor still worked and i replaced the 3uf 250 cap with
a 22 uf cap at 450 vdc
stuffed it back into it's case and it had kept fine time for the last
week, even if there is a glitch (like a segment bar won't light )there
are no electronics to glitch ,just wait for the next min,and it will
self correct via motor power. this sucker is old 42 years (the year i
started to build nixie clocks)
and made by the same guy that did the first desk top world clock,Edwin
M stanley, President of Data-Time, Incorporated.

O wow
I haven’t seen this is 30 years
I fixed one of these for a friend back in the 70's

Nice!

Do you have a photo of the side with the rotating switches too?

Quite a find for $5. Originally I wasn't impressed by the digits not being aligned; but it's actually a clever idea because it really showcases the uniqueness of the design.

I've now seen several clocks using the 2 digit panaplex displays, yet I rarely see devices with the SP-151, which was made specifically for clocks ( 3-1/2 digits, colon, AM/PM) as shown in the attached photo.

will you be able to share the files and code?  or just the foodprint or something for the display?

Not sure if you meant my wristwatch, or Westdave's clock.....

I have design files for gEDA PCB, etc, but I dont recommend this design to anyone for a wristwatch. My HV power supply overheats after 15-20 seconds of continuous usage (transformer saturation).
The original watch shown in my photo no longer works (transformer overheated, I think) , though the original prototype board is still working fine.
Believe it or not, the original prototype is powered by a "worn-out" cellphone battery, that was charged 5 years ago, and it's still keeping decent time and running from that original charge.
Every few weeks I confirm it's still running OK and the display his decent brightness.

The footprint was pretty easy to make; I used a digital caliper to measure the pins relative to 1 location. It takes a few minutes to gently wiggle the display into the PCB.

The code is written in verilog, and compiled onto an FPGA. Unless you have FPGA experience and good soldering skills with SMT devices, this is not a project I would recommend.

id like pics of anyones click/watch they made with this, and my powersupple overheats too but thats ok, can ya send the files mabey?  and i dont have fpga but i  do have some 22v10 gal's and such

You would need hundreds of 22V10's to do the watch; If the HV supply was redesigned, you could use a microcontroller, though I doubt you would have the power-savings I have.

I'll give you the SP-151 footprint & symbol files; when you have those working in gEDA tools I can provide the schematics and layout files.

Unfortunately I can't provide any design support; very long list of projects I have to focus on.

Just sent directly to you; I've been very busy dealing with a knee injury and all of the work/life changes due to COVID-19. Working from home makes everything more difficult and less efficient.  Once you have the gEDA tools installed I can assist with using the files.

sadly i still havent ben able to get it working but im sure i can come up with something, ill try making a board so it multiplexes the segmented displays so it will only use one shift register and the transistors or what not, hope the display will fit
