I dont see these listed very often; today there are 4 different lots posted. Happy bidding.
Personally I'm not a big fan of segment displays because they remind me too much of LEDs.
Now, if they were 7094's at this price I would be drooling.......

Greg, I never used to like the B7971's either...and passed up the opportunity to buy quite a few at around 15 to 20 dollars at the time. I didn't think they were a true nixie...;-) However, they're now one of my favorite tubes, most fittingly placed in a MOD_6 clock (www.badnixie.com). If you don't own one of these already, they're pretty amazing timepieces. Shame they run about 100 dollars a tube now!

Cheers,

Nick

Hmmm.... 100 dollars per tube, you say?

That shows that possibly I made the right decision
back in 1998, when I bought over 3 dozen of them
at $11 each! I was offered the whole lot, around 500
of them, for a few thousand dollars, which I passed
up. Should have got the lot! It would have been
a better investment than the stock market, bonds,
real estate, gold, silver, etfs, mutual funds, 401K
or any of those!

B-7971 tubes. Who would have known?

But for now I'll hang on to them because I do like
firing up the 16-tube scrolling text array of them
from time to time, and it's nice to have a few spares
kicking around.

Chuck

Wow! Did anyone check out those auctions? I saw a set of 6 for 750$ and another set of 4 for 1200$!! Apparently the sellers think they won the lotto with those things! Does anyone really want a large glowy tube that badly? I'm all about cool stuff, I bought a bunch of Russian tubes to play around with, but I'd have to REALLY want that clock with big digits pretty badly I think. But hey, if they can fetch those prices for the tubes then more power to them. It's the amazing craziness of the free market (which also produces crazy things like Aston kutcher making 700,000$ an episode for a half hour comedy sitcom!)

I was watching a set of B7971s the other week on Ebay UK that were in a random number generator.

The box sold for £162, collection only from east London.

Easy to sell for $750 for a set of 6.  The bigger issue on ebay is if you can trust the seller or not.  And the fact that MOST of those auctions say "as is" or "not tested".  I do have to say that my favorite auction was the one showing the crack and stating you only need to fix the crack and refill with gases.  Heh.

Buy them and keep them for an investment.  I would happily sell ya a set of four for a Bitcoin.

Also, it's hard to appreciate that big clock until you have it in front of you.  You might just want one for each room.  I mean, they all sync up to the same GPS signal transmitter.  I spent days running from room to room seeing if the time was dead on accurate.  Ok, JK.

I think there are people in this group that have the clocks for sale as well.  Half the fun and appreciation is building it yourself.  :]

I have two, and they are really great.

I learned a lot about surface mount soldering at the same time.

Well done to Carl Ott and a wonderful design.

The pain is getting the tubes…..I wish I could get some at low cost…..
