I am listing a set of 6 tested NOS NL5440A (Smooth top design)nixies on
E-bay auction number 281219252887. Auction ends in about 16 hours. I
will be listing more of these tubes soon. This is my shameless plug.

I have been a member of this group for a long time and have learned a lot
and have made many friends. So for the coming Christmas season I am going
to give away a set of 6 of the NL5440A tubes, the only cost will be for
postage(At the post office cost).
The informal contest will be for the most interesting use for these
tubes. Clock, GPS, Depth meter for your one man sub, what ever! Put the
ideas on the group and the group can vote. Most popular wins. I hope
this is ok with the moderators. In the far past the group has had opinion
surveys on other topics so I am thinking it can work a bit like that.

I should have thought of a deadline for this contest so here goes.

I think 8 AM Eastern Standard Time on this coming Thursday Dec 12th would
be a good deadline for turning in ideas. Votes would be taken till
Midnight Thursday. (In case of a tie, I will flip a coin.) I get off work
Friday morning and if we have a winner selected the night before I can
mail the tubes out on Friday. Hopefully they can arrive before Christmas.

I am not going to participate in a contest like this because I think there are members who deserve them a lot more than I do. It is nice to see someone doing something nice to a (very helpful) community like this.

That sounds like a lovely project indeed!

I for myself am currently building a non-clock with five IN-14 and two
IN-19A tubes; the purpose is to build a steampunk display for my father:
he is a runner and recently came past the 10000km mark; with this device
he will be able to display the current amount of kilometers after each
run. The two IN-19A tubes will display "k" and "m" statically. Will post
pictures on my website when the project is done, of course.

[This should not be miscontrued as a participation in the contest;
personally, I LOVE the idea of the season tree and I think it is so lovely]

Best wishes
Jens

Here's the project I've been contemplating:

A countdown-to-retirement clock.

My office is already littered with homebrew clocks, but this one would count down days, hours, minutes, and seconds. I'd need 10 digits. 12 if I did years, months, etc.... I haven't thought it thru but maybe just counting down by days would be sufficient - in that case I only need 4 digits. In any case it will be a great conversation piece and might keep me motivated at work.

How about six Nixies to replace "UP TO" six dice for playing various
games. Any number of nixies could be turned on depending on how many
dice were needed for the particular game being played, and then a random
number generator would be used to select counts of from 1-6 for each
Nixie turned on. Should be simple enough. Ira.

That would be a nice piece! It could even be set up to do the various dice (4-sided, 20-sided, percentile dice) used in other games. And if you used nixies with a particularly radioactive fill, you could use a GM tube to help get higher quality randomization.

Hello, I am a bit slow here. Well no votes came in on the submissions from
the group. I read all the submissions to my local judge (Maria, my wife).
We both really liked the seasons tree. For the season that it is, it is
very adaptable for occasions other than Christmas(Hey it could count down
to Christmas!) and also for the father daughter aspect. So it is my
inclination to reward the tubes to Jorge and his daughter. I liked the
other two submissions as well and I want to thank everybody that
responded. So.... I said there would be a vote what does everybody think
of Jorge getting the tubes?
