How about all the lurkers out there share some pictures of one of their favorites?

Here’s one of mine...(among many)

Maybe we could start a folder on the group to keep pictures in and serve as inspiration for others? I know there’s some very talented craftsman on the list who have shared before...

Any tips on how to take good-quality photos ? Mine always turn out looking horrible, partly due to reflections from the various glass surfaces.

Even with a tripod and minimal sources for reflections doesn't help me much.

I’ve only ever used my iPhone to take pictures and some are good, some not so much...lighting is important! I have noticed that the recent XR camera doesn’t handle the glow of nixies very well, so i have to use a filter afterwards to get them to look a little cooler....

Nixie's aren't too difficult with a good camera phone, just trial and error - VFDs are hard as hell though. Any tips on photographing those would be very much appreciated.

I use multiple exposures to photograph objects with lights. There are two ways of combining exposures. One is to load them into separate layers in an application like Photoshop and mask out the areas you wish to composite. This can be time consuming but it works.

The second is to use High Dynamic Range (HDR). This requires bracketing several exposures one or two EV apart and processing them in an HDR app.

Photoshop has some HDR features but I find it to be too limited for my purposes. There are a number of specialized HDR apps available now. They fall into two camps: inexpensive ones that don't give you very many variables to play with and spit out generic and often unnatural looking images and expensive ones that can be tweaked to death to create more realistic images.

Here are pictures of two Systron Donner devices that I processed in Photomatix Pro:

These required five exposures and took about about twenty minutes each to process. The timecode unit is a bit fuzzy because I didn't have time to set the camera up properly for low-noise images and it took a while to clean it up in Photoshop. The frequency counter was done the right way with the camera configured like this:

* Camera on tripod with remote release switch

* ISO set to 100

* Aperture set to f18

* Autofocus and image stabilization turned off; camera focused manually in live view

* Custom white balance calibrated with a rather expensive gray card

Given the relatively low ambient light some of the exposures took over 30 seconds, hence the need for the complicated, "everything set to manual" configuration. I ended up with exposures that were very low noise and had good depth of field.

Unnatural HDRs aren't necessarily bad. Take a look at my Halloween setup:

There were some on eBay for $25 apiece but that was months ago.

Here's an odd one I made of older parts lying around.  Yes, I chose tiny tubes for the seconds.  Just finished the clear 1/8" acrylic on Friday.

IN-8 Clock. Much smaller to fit on my desk and hase more features than the Z5660M one. The case is made from acrylic panels

I’ve quite a few interesting nixie clocks using various tubes (mostly the Soviet variety) on my website mahdialhusseini.com. I’m a fan of using exotic woods (koa, ebony, paduak) for the exteriors; I think it complements the nixies nicely.

I'm not sure what Nick and I will be doing for a front panel for the 7
dekatron clock as cases are more of Nick's department than mine.. It is
likely there will be at least two designs one in acrylic and a premium
in aluminium. Using Schaeffer is always an option. The are not cheap but
the results are superb.

A mixture of anodized aluminium (note the correct spelling...:-) and acrylic. It will also follow the same overall dimensions to the Fortress E1T so you can collect the set....

That’s an interesting link Grahame. I will be looking for some means of having an enclosure made in the next month or so. It looks like they are a possibility. If you guys have any other ideas about how I might do that I would be interested to hear them. I don’t have the tools to make it myself.

I’ve also got the full set of dekatrons for this clock you guys are working on. So no pressure.

And eventually I’ll get around to trying to build a scope clock...

I just bought enough tubes to make 3 of those clocks.  And, enough circuit boards and parts to make 5 of them.

(Some tubes and circuit boards are here.  The components will be here in a few days.)

 I started building Nixie based clocks about a year ago and have completed 7 since with an 8th work in progress. The first clock

was based on a commercial kit and 6 x IN-8-2 Nixie tubes. The second was based on an Arduino Mega board with 6 x IN-14 Nixie tubes

using Direct Drive wiring. The third clock was based on two Arduino Mega boards with 6 x IN-12A Nixie tubes plus two IN-15A tubes as a front display and

6 X IN-18 tubes as the top display, again using Direct Drive wiring. The forth clock was based on an Arduino Uno board supporting 2 x IN-13 tubes and used

a servo motor to spin the three sided display. The fifth clock was again based on a Arduino Mega board supporting a single IV-27M tube

using a single MAX6921AWI display driver chip and multiplex wiring.  The sixth clock again used two Arduino Mega boards with two MAX6921AWI display

driver chips and multiplex wiring supporting 16 x IV-11 tubes.The seventh clock was again based on a single Arduino Mega board, MAX6921AWI display

driver chip. multiplex wiring and 8 x ILC/1-1-8 VFD tubes. All of these clocks except the first display time, date, temperature in Centigrade and Fahrenheit,

pressure, humidity, and chime quarter hours and hours and can be adjusted using a simple keypad and display mounted at the back of the clock.

Would you happen to know the name or maker of that 4 digit ZM1350 panaplex clock? I was working on a very similar project just now; if there are any more pictures of it I'd love to see them.

I'm going for a very Dieter Rams esque design motif and this clock seems to be along those lines. (He designed a lot of appliances for Braun; very unique and minimalist style).

Still have to clean up the edges of the aluminum.  The aluminum is a funny story.  We recently tore down an old aluminum screen door and the bottom panel was this aluminum.  It was actually two sheets back to back, so the sides that where touching where still nice and shiny.  Now that I think of it the tubes and aluminum are both from the 70s.

I have another of these built and waiting for the case and 3 more boards I might turn into clocks eventually.

Yes IN-14 tubes.

I do really like the radar sensor which is behind the wood and thus not visible. It works between 5 and 7 m and wakes up the clock as soon you enter the room (cool effect to attract the eyes !)

Revisiting the 'post a picture of your favourite clock' as I think I've just completed mine - this is a 3D wooden puzzle of a Solent seaplane purchased from ebay, with the engines/props replaced with a 3D printed tube holder + pipes structure, PCB (PV Dink) housed in the base. It's turned out nicer than I thought. Apologies to anyone who's seen it on the Nixie clocks fb page.

4 clocks each with 8 tubes with plus minus tube flashing at 1  PPS each with its own GPS ,taking only the 1 second output of the GPS  they will keep time that you can check on your phone app for UTC

the rectangle tubes are easy to find do not cost to much, are of a nice size and are easy to mount using stand off hardware and clear plastic boxes ,direct drive ,three neurons design, and circuit board, no decatrons were used, the kit will use a dekatron to keep the time ,or use 50/60 cps

or it will take a external 1 PPS input, and flash the +,- tubes

took a while what did he mean by that ?Ohhhh the ax man, is on a PIR relay the real cheap PIR  work 5volts to over 12 volts have built in time delays and range adjustments need a 1 transistor and a relay in the voltage you are using ,10 for under $20 amazon, has a 5volt rechargeable power pack will run for months, walk near it and it rampages for the count of ten and shuts off

Oops! This isn't a Nixie clock, but VFDs are allowed too? 

Made this a while ago from a surplus Soviet VFD display board that (used to) be available on eBay in great quantities for cheap. 

Now its a functional clock with time and date set up in my office. (Last photo is the only one I had on hand of it running in my office, can't exactly go in there to take a better picture now due to the 'rona!

Very nice....I do like the look of the filaments in these, and they last a long time too....my DR2000 clock has been running for years and even though it's line frequency disciplined, over the long-haul keeps good time with it's GPS controlled brethren...

Ian has a nice numitron clock kit with some extra bling.

Awesome! I'm just using a DS3231 to keep time, so far so good, about 1 second a month accuracy...will have to experiment with GPS or something else to get it even more accurate.
