Hey everyone,

In case anyone hasn’t heard yet I just received the news that Martin was hit by a car and passed away today. I don’t have any details beyond that. We’re all very saddened to hear this. It’s still sinking in for me. If anyone hears anything please post it here if you can so the rest of us can stay informed.

Take care of yourselves,

Nick

It happened on New Light Rd north of HW 98 at 6:09 this morning. He was probably heading up to Oxford in pursuit of K-Hound miles. It was a hit and run, however the Highway Patrol might be able to determine who the driver was. The Highway Patrolman stated that he didn't suffer, most likely it was instantaneous.

I think we should hold Martin's scheduled rides for Sept and Oct as a remembrance of the energy and enthusiasm he brought as a new RBA trying to grow the sport.

Thanks Mike for sharing that. And yes I agree that’s a great idea. We should definitely make those rides happen. I will be at both rides and can facilitate if needed.

Thanks,

(I thought I had already sent this out but just found this draft in my drafts folder.  Excuse me if this is a repost and if not, pardon me for being late to express my condolences)

As a cyclist who is still slowly and painfully recovering from being hit in November of 2021 by a horrible driver who was driving illegally (revoked license) and dangerously, I can relate to the horrible trauma that these situations inflict upon numerous people surrounding the cyclist.  My thoughts, wishes, prayers, and hopes for peaceful grieving which comes as a result of this go out to his loved ones and family members.  I only rode with Martin a couple of times but he was a great guy and safe, respectful, and careful cyclist.  A horrible hit and run disgusts me on many levels.  If there is anything I can do personally or as the Vice President of BikeWalkNC at our upcoming annual advocacy and safety summit.  This year it is being held in Chapel Hill in just a few weeks.  For more info see: https://www.bikewalknc.org

If anyone has contact with his family, please let them know that I am willing to discuss ways we can use attention we expect to get for the summit to bring more respectful attention to what happened to Martin and the need to find who killed him.  Together we can continue to fight to change and improve policies and practices so that all of our roads and vehicles are safer and accessible to all users

Steven

I’m glad you mentioned that Steven. I too was hoping to find a way to use this and the other incidents to enact some change for the better. Although I’m clueless as to how to do that. I don’t think Martin had much close family. I think they lived in Chicago but that’s all I know.

It’s been my experience here that some of the drivers are either totally unaware or purposely dangerous (picture that ford super duty passing as close as possible to prove how important he is)

How can we protect against that? It’s almost like all drivers need to be made aware that it’s actually not okay in NC to hit pedestrians and cyclists with your vehicle.

I would like to help if I could.

The motorist who struck Martin has been charged with felony hit and run, and misdemeanor death by motor vehicle.

According to the Wake County Superior Court website, her first appearance was Sept 03, and they also list three other charges: 1- Obstructing justice, 2- Reckless driving to endanger, and 3- Driving left of center.

She also has a pretty long court record.

Can anyone make out what’s happening with this case? I’d like to be in the courtroom when/if she next appears, but I don’t know what all this means.

Branson,

I'm no good at interpreting the court docket, but I see that Mary Ashton Mangum is the Asst District Attorney handling the case. According to the Wake County Contact Directory, the Wake Co DA's phone number is (919) 792-5000.  Maybe they'd know more, or know how to put us in direct contact with ADA Mangum.

Thanks for sharing this. It looks like she was arrested on 8/30...so, same day...but this info is just becoming public (to preserve the integrity of the investigation and the case, I suspect).

When I search through e-courts with her name etc it appears that her next court date will be 09-23 at 900 at the Wake County Justice Center, courtroom 301.

If it is anything like the legal system process with the driver who hit me in November of 2021, expect this to be one of many court dates involved.

The driver who hit me continues to drive despite it being a violation of her probation.  Between Pitt and Edgecombe counties, she has been caught driving dangerously without a license five times this year so far and nothing more has been done regarding her.  Most of the charges against the driver who nearly killed me were all thrown out because the trooper never appeared in court-that is the reason the Asst DA in Pitt County told me at least.

So if you plan to attend (and I think you should keep attention on the case or it will be passed over) be prepared for multiple visits and a great amount of frustration.  After my experiences in court in Pitt County as the person who was hit and then after being arrested and jailed for daring to use my wheelchair in the roadway according to state law because the bus stop was inaccessible and the sidewalks nonexistent, I have lost all trust and faith in what I used to consider the system of justice.  I now consider it merely a legal system.  Sitting in court and listening to the multitude of driving offenses that are pled down, dismissed, or otherwise reduced so that poor drivers can continue to drive will be very disturbing so be warned.

Now understand that criminally, her fleeing the scene (felony) carries a much more serious and severe possible punishment that the killing of Martin (misdemeanor) because of how the laws in this state are written.  Killing someone by hitting them with a motor vehicle is not taken very seriously in terms of consequences-in my opinion.  Then add in the insurance policy of contributory negligence (not part of criminal charges, mind you), and the laws of NC are a bit stacked against cyclists and pedestrians-again my opinion and I'm a school psychologist not an attorney.  Add in the state ban on using any state funds for stand alone bike/ped projects plus road designs with throughput as the primary objective not safety, plus the lack of safety rating standards in the US for car and truck designs for anyone exterior to the increasing larger motor vehicles and you get a recipe for horrific road violence, like this.

I hope that cases like this can improve things but it is going to take all of us as a village to change the culture and systems around us.  This is one reason why I support and am involved with BikeWalkNC.  So that we can advocate, educate, and collaborate with others to make our shared roads safer and more accessible for all users.  It is a tough uphill battle but one that I am fighting with others in honor of our fellow cyclists whom we have lost and those who are altered for life by becoming seriously injured due to road violence.  Advocacy gives me an outlet for my frustration about the systems which favor drivers above all else and it gives me hope that things can improve so that others do not need to suffer as I and others do.

Let me know if there is anything I can do.

Steven Hardy-Braz

The motorist who struck Martin has been charged with felony hit and run, and misdemeanor death by motor vehicle.

According to the Wake County Superior Court website, her first appearance was Sept 03, and they also list three other charges: 1- Obstructing justice, 2- Reckless driving to endanger, and 3- Driving left of center.

She also has a pretty long court record.

Can anyone make out what’s happening with this case? I’d like to be in the courtroom when/if she next appears, but I don’t know what all this means.

Hello All,

Martin and I often rode together years ago before I moved from Raleigh, I'm devastated to hear of his tragic death. He would often "ride to the ride" to add on extra miles
and he knew all the routes without having to look at a cue sheet or GPS device. His knowledge was boundless as was his blogging on "Irregular Velo Adventures"
with facts, history and cycling anecdotes. To preserve Martin's legacy, does anyone know if it would be possible to sustain "Irregular Velo Adventures" intact and online? It would
be a grand tribute to Martin. And if anyone has contact info for his family please let me know. Rest in peace my good friend, rest in peace.

For those without the context for this image, this is Martin with Clyde Jones, a nationally known folk artist from Bynum, NC. If you ever got to ride the now inactive perm called "Clyde's Curious Critter Chatham County Cycling Circuit" (aka "The 7Cs") — one of my favorite routes — the highlight was riding past Clyde's humble, quirky house that is essentially a folk art monument. Because so many Randonneurs passed and enjoyed this hallowed site, Martin had the idea one day to stop and honor Clyde with a certificate he made. It reads: "This is to certify that CLYDE JONES, For services rendered to the Community, In the form of his world renowned Critters folk art, Is hereby made an Honorary Member of North Carolina Randonneurs. Presented October 21, 2017" Clyde loved it.

I'm going to miss this shit so much. Martin, for all his exasperating stories and salty exterior, was one of the most dedicated and giving people I knew. Whether you were dipping your toe in the water on your first brevet (like me at one time) or had well-earned your stripes (like Alan or Clyde), Martin went above and beyond to support you and make you feel special. I'm just gutted for the recklessness that took a special friend from us all way too soon.

Brad

As a tribute to Martin (and Alan), I'm stepping up to be an interim RBA for the Raleigh Region. I still need to attend a 90 minute intro class, but it's been approved by the RUSA Board.

I'm hoping to run the 4 events remaining on the Raleigh Calendar for 2024. I still need to work out the waiver and signup process for 9/22 but hopefully we can work out those details over the next 10 days. I may need to do them old school with a signup sheet and hard copies of waivers to be signed. At the moment I do not have access to Martin's website. Then next year, since I'm a new RBA I'll probably only be allowed to run a 200 and 300K.

Most likely I'll ride the 110k event on 9/22 and we could have a cookout or pizza at Alan's garage at the end, where we can all tell Martin stories.Even if you don't ride you can still come by and share some memories.

Thanks,
Mike O

Information on how to join or renew your membership can be found here, https://rusa.org/pages/memberservices.

Thanks!

Yes indeed! I'll post something early next week.

Just an FYI, Martin had 2 rides scheduled for Sunday 9/22, a 110k and a 200. If there's interest in the 200k we'll run both.

Thanks!
