I've been happy to use NB for a few semesters.  I'm setting up new classes in NB2 and I feel like I've missed a man page somewhere. Is documentation for NB2 available on the web somewhere?

With the class created, I compose a class list in Excel (Windows) and save it as CSV.  The classlist looks like:

First,Last,Email,Section
Lorel,Breuer,Lorel....@go.winona.edu,01
Cierra,Duerwachter,Cierra.Du...@go.winona.edu,01
Emma,Ehlers,emma....@go.winona.edu,01
Kara,Fay,kara...@go.winona.edu,01
Josh,Giese,josh....@go.winona.edu,01
Isabelle,Gile,isabel...@go.winona.edu,01
Madalyn,Glasbrenner,madalyn.g...@go.winona.edu,01
Mariah,Hall,maria...@go.winona.edu,01
...

When I submit the file (as instructor from the Users page) most of the lines are read in wrong (with null fields).  After import, the downloaded user file looks like,

First,Last,Email,Section
Lorel,Breuer,lorel....@go.winona.edu,01
James,Duffrin,james....@go.winona.edu,02
Chloe,Peterson,chloe.p...@go.winona.edu,02
Nicole,Perron,nicole...@go.winona.edu,02
...

Also, how are students' initial passwords set in this user upload scheme?

Thanks,

Hi Nathan.  Jumana (project lead) is in flight today, but we'll try to tackle this quick.
I'm afraid man pages are pretty far down our todo list.

Hi I have used NB for a few years now and I also had problems with enrolling students with nb2.  It is much less intuitive than old nb in terms of enrolling students I find.  one workaround i have had some success with is i create a csv file and it does re-frame the information, placing their emails in the first name category. not ideal, but it isn't the end of the world.

what i have done on the first day of class is ask people to go the nb2 link and enter their email in the reset password section.  they add the email with which they were enrolled by me (in my case an institutional mail), and then I ask them to look for a password reset mail in their regular or junk folder.  once they click that link and reset their password to something of their choosing, they enter the site. from there they can click on the nb icon on the left hand corner of the screen and they should have access to the class in the left hand column.

As I said, I find NB2much less organically functional then NB original but this worked for me and only took a few minutes to guide students through the set up. It could also probably be spelled out in a step by step so students can log in before a class meeting.  I also agree that a manual for use for would be really helpful in general for the site.

hope this helps.

Thanks for the email.  Yes, the "reset password" box is the route I had my students take.  I agree that a  "join this class" could also be a useful method, but there are obvious security concerns with having an open-to-join class.  Maybe a Join-this-class link that has a 24-hour life?

One... when i create the csv i do it, with: last name, first name, email, section, role.
It generally imports ok except that the distinct names combine and show up in "name" and the username is the same as their email.

What I do on the first day of class is ask everyone to visit the link to nb2 and ask them to place the email I registered them with in the reset password box (lower right hand option on the screen).  this generates a reset password link in their mail.  Normal or junk.  They click the link and reset their password to one of their choosing and then they enter the site. they click on the NB icon in the upper left hand corner and this should show them the class they are enrolled on on the left hand column.  Click that and they are in.

While it works and only takes a few minutes in a class, I suppose you could lay this out in a pre-class mail with the steps also detailed and it would be fine. It feels like a lot more extra effort than what the original NB took, but maybe there is some logic behind it, and once I figured out the workaround it was easy enough to streamline.

Hope this helps,

Ray Schwartz

Feature request: In the old NB you could highlight part of a graph or picture with the select box.  I don't see this option in NB2 - it seems like text annotation is the only option.  Highlighting part of a graph, figure, or picture would be useful in NB2. Also, at least one of my uploaded documents is jpegs of text with no OCR underneath, so text highlighting doesn't work on these pictures of text.  "Use a better document Nathan!" I can hear you-all saying...

Feature request: in the old NB you could look at all of the pdf's in a folder and see which ones had new comments. It seems like that feature isn't present yet in NB2.  When a conversation is ongoing, and spread out over a week, it's very useful to be able to see at a glance which documents have lots of unread discussion.

I really like this idea of  an expiring join link---I'll add it to our (unfortunately long) todo list.

Good annotation of image section (and videos) is the most significant thing we haven't yet brought over from nb version 1.  We're aware its a need for many people and will be getting to it as fast as we can.

That feature is actually in development right now, and should be deployed soon.
