Naviter says somewhere in their ads for Oudie N that it can be used to charge your phone after you land. The "Charging the phone from Oudie N / Omni"  page on the Naviter website tells me to "Swipe down the main Android bar > tap USB connection notification", but I am not offered the USB connection choice. So, how do I make this work?

It's a good question.  I view it as a safety matter.  If the Oudie N can't charge my phone, as advertised, I will need to find another way to keep my phone running at the end of the day.

I have a USB socket on the panel, so I can charge my phone (and the Oudie N, inReach, and QC20 earphones, if needed) from the glider battery; I'd like to be able to use the Oudie N to charge things, should the glider battery have a problem.

Eric's idea of a (type-A or type-C) USB socket on the panel is a good idea.  Watch out for interference coming from the cheap Chinese switching power supply in these sockets which converts 12Vdc to 5Vdc for your phone.   Something similar happened in our hangar when we converted to LED lighting which then caused all our radios to break squelch!  A ferrite bead on the 12Vdc side is a good idea.  Only a very few (and expensive) models are interference free and/or TSO'd.

Another idea for powering your phone during a landout is carrying a small USB power "dongle" with the correct connectors to temporarily go to your ship's battery.  Removing the battery makes it portable.  A power supply something like; https://www.amazon.com/PlusRoc-Waterproof-Converter-Compatible-Raspberry/dp/B09DGDQ48H

My two cents - John (OHM)

I've had trouble finding a low noise converter for a reasonable price.  I have the same exact $9 unit John mentions but it is noisy as hell and nothing I've tried fixes it (ferrites, caps, shielding) - but I'm an amatuer at this stuff.  Works fine for the portable app John mentions, but my batteries are not easily removed so that's not an option.

This $50 unit says low noise, but the form factor sucks for stuffing into my over crowded panel:

Does anyone have a good low-noise OTS converter solution?
thx, JJ

I've put the Naviter USB power converter in 3 sailplanes without problem.  It solved noise problems in all three gliders.  No ferrite beads, chokes, or additional shielding required.

The heat sink on the Naviter unit makes me think it is a linear power converter rather than a switcher converter.  I use my iPhone as a hotspot for the cockpit computer and power it from the Naviter power converter.  Everything works as expected with both XCSoar Jet and Navigator.  I keep the phone in a side pocket in the cockpit.  Just remember to blank the screen (reduces the power required by the phone) before dropping it in the pocket.

Thanks Dave.  I don't see an exposed heatsink in the picture - does it get hot?  If outputting 10W at 5V, a linear unit would be dissipating more than 10W of heat.  Even at 5W out, it would still get really hot.  So I think this is an inverter design which makes it pretty appealing.  I'll try it!
thx, JJ

Hi,

For Oudie N units I don't recommend charging them in flight.  They don't need it.  Charging will add heat in the cockpit.

For iPhones and Android phones, I recommend the Naviter Power Adapter - mentioned above.  I have them in stock.

I'll check next weekend when I'm at the club.  But I remember being able to see what looked like a heatsink under the heatshrink.  But if you start with a charged battery you aren't looking a the same current draw for a low battery situation.

Hi,

I asked Jost at Naviter for information about charging your phone using the Oudie N battery.  His response is below.  Note that you should update 3 things: Operating System, Home app, and Navigator app.

Paul Remde

Oudie N needs to be updated to the latest version 2.4.2+2503281131 before doing this (released on Friday). Please check and update if needed. After that, follow these instructions: https://kb.naviter.com/en/kb/charging-the-phone-from-oudie-n-omni - Jost

Hi,

I tested the tip from Naviter. I found that I needed to have my iPhone connected to the Oudie N to be able to access the USB Preferences option in the top menu.  In the USB Preferences screen I needed to swipe up (scroll down) to see the Charge connected device switch.  I didn't notice it at first.  Once I enabled it, my iPhone made the familiar "phwoom" sound to acknowledge that it had just been connected to external power.  Cool.

Best Regards,

Hi Paul,

It's interesting.  My Oudie N is fully up to date.  All I had to do was plug my phone into the Oudie N and it it automatically started charging my iPhone.  I didn't have to do anything else.  Not sure what is different but that's all I had to do.

Later!

For info, here's a screenshot of what I see when I pull down from the top.
