Hi Everyone,

Can someone suggest an introductory book or article, or other resources to study the different Christian communities of the Middle East? There are so many divisions and denominations, I am confused.

I would also appreciate if you could share a map or another visual presentation of the division of the churches in the Middle East.

Waiting hopefully,
Marion

If you can find a copy in English, you could try Christianity: A History in the Middle East.
The Arabic version is also available at christianlib.com if that is suitable. If neither of these are available options, you can send me a private email at irbide...@gmail.com

Hello Marion,

Sebastian Brock's classic article "The 'Nestorian' Church: A Lamentable Misnomer" contains a chart showing how the various churches relate to one another theologically (i.e. what are the theological issues over which they separated, and so forth).

Best Regards,

Onsi

In addition to the valuable suggestions offered by others, I find Professor Alexander Treiger’s attached article significantly helpful, especially in discussing the complex interactions between Melkites and Nestorians.

According to a discussion on this forum in 2021, Bishop Suriel sent Michael Azar a pdf of the whole of Habib Badr's Christianity: A History in the Middle East (I don't know if it was the English or Arabic editions). Are either of them still here and have the pdf?

Best,

Sarah
