Eliya bar Shennaya on Weights and Measures

Dear all,

I’ve been reading up on weights and measures in the pre-modern Islamicate world for something I’m writing. I’m mainly looking for basic definitions of Arabic terms and their approximate values, though I’m aware these vary across periods. I generally leave such terms untranslated, but I’d like to give readers a sense of the scale involved.

I know there's a treatise on the subject by Eliya, Metropolitan of Nisibis, translated—but not edited—by Sauvaire in 1877. I'm happy to cite it but am curious to know whether this work has since appeared in a modern printed edition.

Any help would be appreciated.

Dear Salam,

According to the recent edition by Bishara, Elias of Nisibis, The Book of the Demonstration of the Correctness of the Faith (Kitāb al-burhān ‘alā ṣaḥīḥ al-īmān), published in 2023 by UCOPress (CNERU) in collaboration with Éditions de l’USJ (CEDRAC), the treatise on weights and measures remains unedited. Sauvaire’s 1877 French translation is still the only available version.
