Dear all,

Do any of you know of a way to access the Arabic text of Jābir ibn Ḥayyān's "Kitāb al-sabʿīn"? I am in particular looking for Book 3, entitled "Kitāb al-Thalāthīn kalima." (Though this is perhaps not strictly within the topic of this list, Christians are certainly part of the history of chemistry/alchemy, so I hope I may be permitted to ask this question here.)

I know of the facsimile of the Bursa manuscript (https://catalog.princeton.edu/catalog/SCSB-2599752) but have been unable to get ahold of a copy at the moment. Is there perhaps a PDF of that facsimile (or perhaps only Book 3, which according to Sezgin GAS 4:238 -- relevant portion attached -- occurs on pp. 40-47 of the Bursa manuscript), or of this or another manuscript containing the text? Or an edition I don't know about?

Dear Alex,

Here is Pierre Lory's edition: https://www.dropbox.com/t/zJtnRFnvCyCv2BQc

Kitāb al-Thalāthīn kalima begins on p. 39.

Best wishes,

Salam

Dear Alexandre. If you'd like me to get a scan of the relevant sections of the facsimile edition, located at Princeton, let me know; it's not a problem to request.

Best, Eric Medawar

Dear Salam and Alexandre,

Any chance of obtaining a copy of Lory’s edition? The link doesn’t work anymore.

Thank you in advance.

Salam,

This is a great collection, thank you so much. Unfortunately Kitab al-sab'in is kitab al-lahut. The file must have been renamed by accident. I’ve always regretted not making a copy of Lory’s facsimile of this book at the Warburg institute!!

Best wishes,

Ghazoan

That's because the K. al-Lāhūt is part of the K. al-Sabʿīn (texts 1-10 edited in Lory's L'Élaboration de l'élixir suprême are from the K. al-Sabʿīn). That must be why the file has that name. If it's the whole thing you're after, there's Sezgin's facsimile. I don't have a PDF of that unfortunately, but I recommend contacting Sébastien Moureau at Louvain (sebastie...@uclouvain.be). He's usually willing to help with PDFs of all things alchemical.

Best,

Salam

Dear Salam,
