Aloha NHH Ohana,

This year our club became a 501c3 non-profit organization. We are extremely pleased to have this new tax exempt status, and the board has decided that a simpler name that would better represent who we are and would serve us better.

Our full name is currently Na Hoa Holomoku of Hawaii Yacht Club which is a mouthful to say the least. The "of Hawaii" seems unnecessary as I do not think we would ever be confused with any other Na Hoa Holomoku in any other state. Furthermore, we do not think "Yacht Club" is a fair representation of who we are either.

The new proposed names are as follows:
1. Na Hoa Holomoku Sailing Ohana
2. Na Hoa Holomoku Sailing Club
3. Na Hoa Holomoku Sailing Hui

Let us know your thoughts on the name change and which name you would prefer as our new identity. Also, let us know if you have an idea for a new name. Our next board meeting is at 6pm on November 7th. Please join us via zoom to discuss this matter.

Choice is #1. I love ‘Ohana in the name, because that’s who we are.

Hmm - getting old and can’t recall what Na Holomoku translates to anymore… (Old Timers creeping in?)

In any case, I ❤️ All Y’all, no matter what we’re called!!

(…gotta say that when I brag abour club to outsiders I just tell them to web search for Hilo Sailing Club - seems to work good.)

Hugs!!

When I talk about the club to non-club members I too just tell them to web search Hilo Sailing Club. Beyond bringing up the web links at the top of the search return, this contextualizes for the not yet familiar where we are located, what we do, and how we are structured at the first introduction which is often in my case to people who have never been on the the water before or never have been on a sailboat.

I think we should change it to Na Hoa Holomoku Sailing Club. English is most appropriate in this situation in my opinion.
I looked up Na Hoa Holomoku, because I couldn’t remember what it means either, and it translates to “friends of sailing” or “sailing friends”

I know it would be a huge change, and I may be in the minority, but a 4th option could just be Hilo Sailing Club.   Simple.  To the point.  And a little less confusing than having basically two names.   Being different than the website can be confusing.   Yes, we would lose some of the Hawaiian flavor, which I love, but it is simpler and more descriptive at the same time.   How many actually say the whole name when talking to friends and the public compared to just short hand, hili sailing or Hilo sailing club, or my favorite, THE Hilo sailing club.

I agree with Gary on this.. while I love the Hawaiian language, calling it The Hilo Sailing Club is much more straight forward and it’s probably what most of us call it already when suggesting it to friends and family. Maybe we can start giving all our boats Hawaiian names to honor the language and educate our members of the meanings of different words. :)

Aloha,

It would be sad to lose the Hawaiian name, I also always call us “Hilo Sailing Club” when talking to people.
Im not sure I have a preference…

I am torn also.   We already have 3 different entities that our boats are under.   Makes it really confusing working with the county and state as to which boats and moorage are under which name.   Hilo sailing is more descriptive but I like the Hawaiian name.   But I also never use it as no one else knows what it means or can even pronounce it.    Decisions decisions.

I support retaining the Hawaiian name. It continuously reminds  people of the special place that hosts the club. It encourages familiarity with the Hawaiian language and represents the value of wholistic education for our ohana. I vote #1- but can see that #2 could provide some compromise.

Option #1 feels slightly redundant since I think of Ohana as friends and family and Na Hoa Holomoku translates as friends of sailing. I lean toward option #2.

According to Google translate it means Shipmates.  How about just Hilo Sailing Hui…or in Hawaiian Hilo Holo Ana Hui (HAH)...  a bit easier to remember.  Again per google translate, would have to confirm with someone who speaks Hawaiian.

Similar to Billy’s reply, “The Sailing Friends Sailing Family” (Na Hoa Holomoku Sailing Ohana) is awkward and somewhat redundant. I am only a beginner in ʻŌlelo Hawaiʻi but if perpetuating the language or culture in the name is important then something like the following would be more appropriate:
  1. Na Hoa Holomoku o Hilo (The Sailing Friends of Hilo) or
  2. Ka Hui o Holomoku o Hilo (The Sailing Club of Hilo) or
  3. Holomoku ʻOhana o Hilo (Sailing Family of Hilo)
Otherwise Gary’s suggestion of Hilo Sailing Club works fine as well. Also it would be important to spell the Hawaiian words correctly if they are to be used by placing the kahakō and ʻokina in the appropriate locations like in the word ʻohana.

A variation to both preserve the Hawaiian name and promote hilo sailing could be "Na Hoa Holomoku Hilo Sailing Club."

I feel the ‘Ohana vibes but would go with Club for the organization name. It sounds bigger and more encompassing than a nuclear family.

I also agree the combination (Na Hoa Holomoku Hilo Sailing Club) is a good compromise and includes what the name should be and what it’s more commonly referred to as. Although lengthy, maybe this is what everyone can agree on. :)

Hello,

Thanks dear members for all the discussion.
I appreciate the respect of tradition, language, and meaning—the one consideration from my sometimes admin help POV would be this:

- as the organization grows, you might want to think how this will look on advertisements/logos/applications. In some cases, longer names are very difficult to print or design for so at least a nice abbreviation or acronym for a long name if possible would be great
- whatever the URL and Facebook pages become, depending on how inclusive you want to be it needs to be easy to remember, recommend, and search.  So while it can have an official pretty name, the simpler the URL (i.e. hilosailingclub.com) will be easier to type and not misspell

I love language and really appreciate learning the meaning of the club’s original name and hope our kids understand it as well.  But for two years I didn’t think to ask and upon reflection I think the message of the name was carried, but could be enforced if immediately obvious or given as a translation on whatever website.

Thank you all
Mari

I appreciate what William Kapaau had contributed regarding the Hawaiian phrasing and it seems like if we want to keep the Hawaiian language in tact, we could look at  ‘Ka Hui o Holomoku o Hilo’, shorter than the original and a direct translation of Hilo Sailing Club.

I think we all could change our use of the work

Looks like to keep the Hawaiian name, Na Hoa Holomoku Hilo sailing club is a good compromise.   Still can use NHH sailing club for short.  And hilosailing.org website still fits also.
Keeping Hawaiian language in there, from what I’ve been told, may help us down the road.  Same with replacing yacht club with sailing club.
