How to restore my custom views/tabs?

Hi Guys,

I had a bunch of custom views and tabs based on them in my previous set-up but after reinstaling Windows/MLO those were not restored from my profile (do they sync to file at all?). Is there a way to get them back? 

Besides, every time I reinstal MLO and restore my profile I'm getting duplicates of contexts. For example, by default there's @Home context, now after reinstaling I have got @Home and @Home1. Is this normal?

OK, I've gone through manual once more and found out that one can export/import views. Probably the reason why I've ended up with no custom views after MLO reistalation is that I didn't export them thinking they get synced to main MLO profile file (and they don't, right?). Am I getting it right now?

What about context duplicates, this I can't figure out on my own.. All comments are wolcome!

Your question is a little ambiguous as between the local profile file and the cloud file.

The local profile file is a file on your computer with a name that ends in .ml - it contains your outline with folders, tasks and projects, also your contexts, your views, your custom formatting rules, some of your options and probably some other stuff. The cloud file is what you get when you synch to the MLO cloud service. It contains your outline and contexts but not your views, formatting, etc. When you uninstall MLO it does not delete your profile files, so when you reinstall MLO you should be able to just open your profile file and off you go with all of your tasks, views, and whatever.

Suppose that you somehow deleted your profile file at the same time that you reinstalled MLO. My advice would be to find where you do your Windows backups and restore the profile file from the last most current backup.

Suppose that you do not have a current backup but you do have a cloud file. Then I would suggest to create a new blank profile file and synch it with the cloud to restore the profile. Your views would be lost.

If you are planning to delete your profile file often and restore it from the cloud (which is not something I would recommend that you do) then you would want to export your custom viws so that you can restore them to your new profile file.  

If you were to open an existing profile file and synch it with the cloud, and if MLO was unable to verify, for some reason, that the profile and the cloud were about the same outline, then MLO would treat it like you had two different profiles and wanted to merge them. In this case, if both profiles has a context such as @Work, MLO would rename the neww @work (arriving via synch from the cloud file) as @Work1. If this happens you can hit f8 to bring up the context management window, then select @Work1 and hit the delete key on your keyboard. A pop up will ask you if you want to delete the context. Say yes and pick the option to move and tasks associated with @Work1 onto @Work. Repeat for any other duplicated contexts. When you are done, synch with the cloud. Then, if you have any other devices that synch to the same cloud file, synch them as well. Then synch windows again. If there are any more duplicates, repeat the procedure.

Actually I didn't realize that local file wasn't the same thing as cloud file. I thought I could e.g. switch the pc to new one and all my settings and views etc. would be restored from the cloud. However, as describe it above I was wrong.

By reistalation I meant migrating to completely new pc (I called it reinstallation simply not to dwell on that too much). Ok, that's clear now. I still have old machine's hard drive so restoring old profile shouldn't be a problem.

As to duplicates - I'm switching machine/updating system every so often and every time I end up having duplicates. Deleting them is infact not much hassle, but I'd be better off knowing exactly what steps should be taken (and in what sequence) after e.g. switching to new pc and having completely new MLO installation.

Hi, Robert.  What devices are you synching with your ckiud file? Just your one Windows machine? Or are there other windows snd phones as well?
