With the demise of XP, I'm considering a move to a Chromebook.  Can Chromebook run the full-fledge version of the new MLO2?  Or is a hard-disk required?

MLO is not designed for Chromebook. Or do you mean that Chromebook may run an emulator which allow Android version to run on it?

Andrey.

I have managed to install MLO on a chromebook using crouton then wine. I managed to start it once with each of arcwelder & archon but couldnt repeat [even after a powerwash].

I am now trying to connect to cloud sync and saw elsewhere that people had got it working with msxml6 & ie7 when using parallels on a mac so I thought I would try the same. I managed to get msxml6_x64 running by downloading the msi file from microsoft and then using

wine64 msiexec /i /path/to/msxml6_x64.msi

but I have tried numerous methods to get IE7 (or any version) installed but with no luck so far. error message is "IE7 not supported on this operating system".

Error with MLO on attempted cloudsync is "OLE error 80020006".

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Chromebook is a Toshiba 2 (Intel 64)

Thanks in advance

Dave

in the end I switched to developer mode on chromebook and managed to get 2.07 working using ARC Welder or just (easier) the load unpacked extension function (just click button at top left in developer mode extensions tab and direct it to the directory containing the unzipped MLO apk. Now however it starts but the plugin crashes before start up is complete. if i use a newly downloaded and unzipped apk its shows the first hint (without the text) and then crashes without letting me get to anything else.

If somebody has better luck with this please let me know.

Thanks

Andrey,

I'm also moving away from Windows, and don't want to leave MLO behind.

It would be cool if the Android version could be made to work on Chromebook (chromeos) with the Android Runtime for Chrome (using the ARCwelder tool).

You only have to develop the application for Android (which you have already), and the Chromebook compatible version can be built from that.
I would be happy to alpha/beta test.

There are a few examples of other Android apps which have now become available for ChromeOS using this technique.

Thanks
Max

I actually got the Android version 2 of MLO running on the Chromebook Pixel (original 2013 version). Here is what I did:

Installed "ARChon Packager" (available in the Google Play Store) on my Android phone. Used it to extract and package the MLO APK as a Chrome extension:
- start ARChon Packager
- select "Installed application"
- select "MLO 2" from the application list
- choose "Tablet mode" and "Landscape"
- I am not sure if you need "Enable access to apps files on PC/Chrome." or if it makes any difference
- move the resulting ZIP file onto your Chromebook (I put it into the Downloads folder)

I also installed another application from the Chrome store which required the ARC (Android Runtime for Chrome). There are a few apps which do that. In my case, I had installed AquaMail. This will cause the ARC to be installed on your Chromebook.

UnZIP the ZIP file that you created earlier.

In the Chrome browser, open chrome://extensions and enable the checkbox "Developer mode" ("Entwicklermodus" in the German version).

Then load unpacked extension ("Entpackte Erweiterung laden...") and choose the folder where you unpacked you MLO 2 ZIP file. I got a warning message but found that things would work anyway.

You should now be able to run MLO 2 either from the universal search or directly from the chrome://extensions page -- there is a "Start" ("Starten") link directly below the loaded extension.

These instructions should work on 64-bit Intel Chromebooks. On ARM or 32-bit systems you will need to read more of the documentation for ARChon, I believe there are some additional runtime libraries you will need to install. The author of ARChon has some decent web pages that explain this. I found that on the Chromebook Pixel (64-bit Intel) I do not need these additional libraries.

Once MLO 2 was running, of course I needed to activate my registration (copy/paste the activation key). Cloud sync etc. all works.

Happy Hacking.

MLO on Wine 32 Ubuntu / Crouton [SOLVED]

I switched the wine environment to 32 rather than 64

export WINEARCH=win32

then updated to latest version of wine using their repository [this may not have been the probem but I did it anyway]

then installed the xml parser and ie7

winetricks msxml6

winetricks ie7

I got some errors with ie7 install but ignored them and now am getting a few exceptional [but not fatal] errors with MLO now but its running, syncing and all functions [down to changing font size etc] seem to be working fine.

Thanks for all comments.

I need to give Wine another go... I couldn't manage to install the correct dependencies to get cloud sync to work.

The Android version using ARC welder no longer works, as some while ago Google "fixed" ARC. Now the app still opens, but any clicks in popup windows are offset from where the mouse actually points to, so it is impossible to actually use it. :-(

I will try to follow your suggestions and hope I can get the windows version of MLO to work again on my Chromebook. I have crouton installed and run Thunderbird on it, so the basic Ubuntu environment is there.

Latest state of MLO on Chromebook:
- the Android app (MLO 2) works quite well on Chromebooks that support the Google Play Store. Just install from Play Store, and preferably, put MLO in tablet mode.
- for Chromebooks that support Linux (for example, Pixelbook), the Windows version of MLO can be made to run in wine. See tipps in https://groups.google.com/forum/#!searchin/mylifeorganized/chromebook%7Csort:date/mylifeorganized/IpuT_vdX3xE/y7zEhYIoAwAJ

Enjoy,
Max
