question about recurring tasks - automatic recurring behavior

Can someone figure out what I am doing wrong? I can't seem to get this to work right.

I created a header task (set to "folder") with a couple of subtasks and set it to reoccur every day.

I set the automatic recurring behavior (in the advanced tab) to "automatically recur when all subtasks are complete". (I also tried "automatically recur when any subtask is complete" and that didn't work either.)

I then checked off the subtasks.

My header task remained due today - it did not reset to tomorrow like I thought it would.

If I set it to not be a folder, the header task shows up in my todo list and it behaves as I would expect.

(I want the header to be a "folder" because I like the "complete tasks in order" option and linking them all together individually is time consuming.)

I am running (Microsoft Windows desktop) Professional Edition version 6.0.3

Can you tell what I did wrong?
Thanks!

I don't know if this will help you.... but here is how I manage something similar.

I have a set of tasks that I want to do daily ("want" being the key word, I don't always succeed). I have them each set with a recurrence of "reoccurs 1 day after task is completed". This way, if I do the task, it shows up tomorrow as "new". If I don't do it, it shows as behind, but honestly that helps me prioritize the items I missed.

Bonjour Jean,

When a task is set as a folder it is acting a bit differently then a regular task or a task set as a project. See it as a way to group tasks together.

For your example, unselect "Folder" and it will behave like you want. As for the "Complete in order" it is a separate option that also works with regular Main task

Would it be fair to say that when you are looking at your to-do list, you never want to see a folder? If so, you could add an advanced filter to you to-do views that says "and IsFolder is false"

Sorry, didn't think that went through. My answer is not relevant to your situation. Trying again,

So all your groups with these characteristics as tasks, not folders. Pick a flag, I will use yellow and for each task like this set the yellow flag on the parent task. In your to-do view, added advanced rule that says "and flags does not include yellow flag."

I run my MLO this way with many folders and it works the way I believe you're trying to achieve.

If I am correct you ONLY want to see the folder if there is an actual task that is due in it.  When the tasks are all complete the tasks and the folder go away until the next time they need to be acted upon

The only way I know to make this happen is by showing hierarchy.  This way there is zero recurrence on the folder itself, otherwise you end up with a folder that needs to be "checked" off which you cannot do unless it is a check box.

You can see in the attachment that for this example I have a folder named Lexus fast lane tasks which is a subfolder of lexus specific tasks, which itself is a subfolder of manufacturer recurring tasks. The recurrence on each task in the folder (no recurrence on any folder)  is daily>every weekday

In this example I want the recurrence this way  so if I do not do it today every day I don't do it will have an overdue counter like it shows in the picture. I have not done them in 4 days and every day they are on my screen reminding me I need to do them.

The 4TH picture shows my screen after completing the Lexus tasks.  The folder and the folder tree it belonged to disappeared now until tomorrow when it will be back showing me whichever fast lane tasks that need to be completed once again for Lexus and will show me the hierarchy again when it reappears so I know what the tasks refer to.

Now maybe there are much easier / better ways to do this,  I backed into this way and have used it ever since, But I prefer, even require, that I see the folders so I can use shorter task descriptions and do not need explanations in the notes section.

Thank you!
You are correct - changing it from folder made this act in the way I wanted. I clicked the subtasks and the header task reset automatically.
I'm not sure why I didn't try that on my own - I think I just got used to using the folder option for all my header lines.

Still think it should work the same way even if it is set to "folder" but this gets me down the road.

I really appreciate it.
Thanks!

Thank you to everyone who responded.
The answer was to do everything the same way except turn off the "folder" option.
I'm still not sure why that won't work with the folder option turned on but I can do what I want now.

Thank you for the other suggestions. I get stuck using MLO in a particular way and seeing the other ideas for doing similar things is really helpful.

Thanks!

Thank you. You captured my circumstances perfectly LOL (especially with that "want").

I will need to see if this works with the ones I have set for a particular time window - I didn't try it because I thought that this option would reset the time to 24 hours after I completed the previous one rather than my desired time window.

Thanks!
Jean
