I used MLO for the first time to track my annual accounting. It’s amazing, much easier and fast than my previous business process tool.

I defined my accounting as a annually recurring project made of sub-projects with many tasks.

I defined the main accounting project with the advanced recurring properties with “Do not create a complete copy of this task on recurring” checkbox unchecked. I did it to track of all the sub-projects and tasks data. For example, I wanted to know when I began and finished a particular sub-project. The sub-projects are not recurring, but I defined the main project to reset all subtasks to uncompleted, to be ready for the next year. All sub-projects have their dates defined with “Inherit parent dates.”

When I finished my whole job, I checked the complete button. Then all the structure was updated with the new recurring dates. That’s great.

However, only the main project line was left for all the work I accomplished. All my statistics are lost. I get only the date I created the project and the date I completed it. (This is not a catastrophe, I can access the backup to extract those statistics.)

However, I’d prefer that MLO keep the entire structure, to compare it more easily next year. What should I do to parameterize it?

Did you ever find a fix for this issue? I have just run into the same problem. I want to keep a record of the subtasks, as well as the main project task.

Hi Dan,

No, I didn't find any fix for this issue. It bugs me to not have any valued trace of the effort that was used in that project. It limits the usefulness of this product.

Thanks

Instead of automatic recurrence, I tried doing this by setting up a template branch and then using Task --> New from template.... However, the I ran into a problem I keep running into - It just sets up the new branch with all the dates set in the template. There's no way to create the new item with new dates relative to a start date I specify, or defining any subtasks with a decent system for inheriting relative dates and other parameters.

For me, the lack of a decent system for pre-setting inheritance or context dependent parameters is the biggest limitation on MLO. I've written about this many times in the forums.

Still, it might be something you'd like to experiment with. If you only set dates for the main project, then at least you'd only have to manually change the dates on one item.
