I upgraded to v6, but the dashboard seems pointless. Who needs another window to deal with and as other users have mentioned, the functionality is extremely limited.

Something much more useful would be split views. You could create a split view using an editor similar to the dashboard editor. Instead of opening in a separate window, the split view would open in a tab. It would provide the full functionality of adding/editing tasks within each pane. So it would be two (or more) views combined into a single tab.

actually i like the idea behind the dashboard thing - the name is misleading however.

If you combine relevant (different) views in one mega-view for handling the same thing from different viewpoints at the same time - makes a lot of sense.
But the name Dashboard suggests some kind of metrics for measuring of progress - to me at least.
So if the name was something like "perspective"s or something alike would be easier to get the idea by name :).
ideas for improvements:
- ability to automatically sync between the different areas - but configurable, not just synched. By this you could have two areas linked and some others just available for "thinking"

now extending on the idea of a real dashboard..
- if there was an option available to have the same areas for task navigation - cool
- but added other real-dashboardy areas where some aggregate-functions of attributes of the tasks would be computed into an aggregate red/yellow/green indicator to start with
- - the you could view different progress areas by navigating the "normal" area while the "dashboardy" area in the overall Dashboard was "working"

lastly my aging feature request ;) - better more differenciated groupings for time oriented views - best configurable.

just some thoughts. Glad to add more details if appreciated.

adding ideas:

- could not add a row to the second column?
did i miss something?
this would enable a progression in details from left to right, while having the first (left9 column covering all rows on the right in the second overall column.
... just a thought for the next update..
would be handy.

a closing thought for today...

as i started to evaulate the dashboard feature i have a recommendation :):
- integrate the feature into the main view - that would be the best option with no need for a new name
- this would - added the partial sync feature - be a quantum leap in the ability to get quick insights from the overall planning efforts

for the "dashboard" name...
- i still like the idea of having aggregate view-areas in the overall view which display just computed indicators from the core attributes
- the engine is there - is basically the filtering feature with some compute enhancements for the indicators to compute
- adding just name and compute rule - and some view-ordering ability - for the version 1 - would be another quantum leap :).

lastly my aging request - more differenciated grouping ability for time oriented groupings.

... for overall strategic vision / life-managent those features would make other target user groups curious about MLO - and the name ..life-organized.. - even more accurate :)

cheers -Alexander

Agree with virtually all of the first two paragraphs.

I have yet to start using ‘Dashboards’ (I also don’t like the term but can’t think of a better one - perhaps ‘Task Organiser’ or ‘Task Board’ or ‘Task Organiser’?) but feel quite excited about the possibilities as I think they have the potential to address a criticism that others have made of MLO which is that it is difficult to get an overview of everything you have to do when you are working on lots of different things (which is why I end up using Trello as well as MLO).

I have from time to time asked for a ‘Lists’ capability such as one gets in Trello (and which is fundamental to a Kanban board).  It looks as if one might be able to do this with a ‘Dashboard’ but I need to experiment.

I am also interested in the ‘aging feature request’ idea – I am not quite sure what this means but I think I have a similar need.    Can you explain a bit more Alexander?

Richard

Related to the term: if the "Dashboard" feature is simply included as default visualisation feature in the main middle canvas, then the naming problem simply goes away ;). And if the linkage of sub-areas is added you get an enhanced workspace feature.

===

the Aging feature:
- intent: see the tasks/deliverables by time-flow - back and forward
- solution: create a view and group the tasks by some time attribute (complete, changed, due, ..) without hierarchy by time

Currently already possible. But not differentiated enough, as after the next month all the rest of time is simply future or past... which is a good start, but not sufficient for longterm planning.
If there was more grouping done, this would be a great enhancement if one focuses on more distant things - or even the life past history or vision for the future.
For both aspects i have defined specific flags for filtering and viewing / creating insights.
More groups would be very very helpful - like:
- next month
- next quarter
- 1,2,3 quarters - back or forth
- next year
- next 5 years
- next decade
same applied for past.
If the grouping intervall was configurable in terms of days to group by in growing distance - even better :).

does this make the idea clearer?

thx -Alexander

related to the Kanban idea.
If you switch the thinking to vertical and group by flags, then you have the canban view ;).
And you can sub-group after the "canban/flag" by any other attribute - which i am doing a lot for getting various perspectives into all my tasks - as i have basically defined myself in MLO in terms of all typical and a-typical goal and especially behaviour planning ;).

I am still playing with it, but my intention is to use a Dashboard for my weekly planning (ala Franklin Planner). One window would have my goals, the next my key roles and "Sharpening the Saw", then finally my project review window. It would only work when I'm connected to my monitor as my laptop screen would be too small to have that many windows in one Dashboard.

This is just my first thought and would be interested in hearing what others are using it for.

I agree that Dashboard isn't the most intuitive word for me either. I think of Dashboard like in an automobile.  Monitoring the current state of speed, engine temp, miles driven, what song I'm listening too ( ha ha).  But what the MLO dashboard actually IS, is more helpful to me than what we are calling a "dashboard".

BTW I use a dashboard on my laptop (and desktop) with no problem, and it has 7 panes, each showing the top few tasks (I’m experimenting with each window being a different level of critical-ness).

I use MLO at home and work and I've only recently figured out how using workspaces can give me everything I need in tabs (it's only taken me years!).  I was hoping the dashboard feature would be more customizable like this. Am I right in assuming you have to create the views you want and then add those to the dashboard? I'm also confused as to why my Inbox view in the dashboard is showing completed items.

@chrisri..,
to get full value of the "system" several features - as you discovered - need to be combined.
if you want we can have video call about this and i can offer some coaching on usage of MLO for various planning purposes - long/short term alike.
Please simple send a note if interested. We can start with a free session and then see how much time we would need to implement all your demands.. :)
