Hi,

With the hard time Ukraine is going thru, I was more then happy to jumps at the MLO 6 upgrade offer and "support the team" However I'm somewhat disappointed with it. Of all the feature requests in this forum, were "Trigger and Actions" and "Dashboard" really on the top of the list? Does a "Dark mode" that is still shaky really deserve to be called MLO 6?

How many times have we seen post like these :

Note field :
  1. Not sure if I'm alone but since working on tasks is a live process, my properties right pane is always in Edit mode. Markdown, with all its added symbol becomes useless. Why all others apps can have WYSIWYG and not MLO? I'm writing this post in GMail and the Bold text shows as Bold. No weird symbol letting me know that the reader will see it as Bold.
  2. The note section is very small and this is another thing that has been posted many times. I taught we would finally have an un-dockable window with a real formatting tool.
  3. How many users are relying on 3rd party apps to gather notes on tasks because MLO note is too limiting...
An many other feature requests were left behind?

As a human, my heart is still with you programming team but as a client I'm very disappointed.

Wishing you the best for 2023

Michel

I actually feel the same way. I wanted to support the team due to the situation in Ukraine but at the same time, version 6 had to be worth the jump. I love the dark mode which helps my eyes but to be honest, I won't personally be using the dashboard features so all I feel like I really got out of version 6 was the dark mode, really. A bit disappointed as well.

I have to agree with you. Going from MLO5 to MLO6 is not worth the money (35USD upgrade). Dasboad is unfinished (missing hide and unhide task button). Dark mode is only a cosmetic improvement. Overall MLO6 looks like a very small update to MLO5. As a professional programmer I can say a few days work. Definitely not an upgrade I recommend.

I'm on the fence about dashboards, main reason is that maybe 90% of my MLO time is on my phone where there are no dashboards and besides, it wouldn't fit.

But you have to consider marketability. It's important to meet the needs of your customer base but there's not a whole lot of new revenue there. Features that bring in new sales are critical. I don't know but I could see dashboards bringing in some new customers.

I have not looked at v6 yet but in my view, the most marketability would come from:

web version (I understand the security risks, but this is 2023)
native macOS version
email to task with attachments.

Hi Guys.

I’m definitely not arguing against your opinions, but I doubt it will hurt to add my POSITIVE opinion of MLO 6.  30 years ago I would have agreed with you entirely.  But nowadays, when I examine the differences in phones, Windows O/S, Spotify, etc., I’m challenged to find ANY material differences.  In this case, I think the dashboard speeds things up entirely.  I have 3 panes: Quick tasks, regular tasks, future tasks, and tasks I’ve unstarred to “put them out of the way til I’m in the mood for them.” And they all fit into a box that’s 1/4 the size of my Main View, which I keep minimized.

By today’s standards, that’s a new version. Dark mode alone wouldn’t be a new version.

Again, I would never counter positive thoughts with negative ones, but here I am countering negative thoughts with positive, since I like MLO 6.

And I should add to my comments and say that I like MLO, too.   Great tool and I'm actually fine with V5 the way it is.     My suggestions only relate to marketability and I think would go a long way to making MLO more popular ... if that is what is wanted, of course.

Dark mode is important to me as I work with MLO a lot in the early hours. I will upgrade just because of this (and I did the same years ago when Photoshop finally introduced a dark mode - and that was way more expensive). I'm interested to try out the new features, but didn't the developers say:

We will continue working on a better look, updating the icons and polishing the dark theme. We are also going to add more languages to the application. And this is just for the start. We plan to improve existing features (like synchronization and reminders) and add more new features to MLO 6, such as ability to schedule tasks according to the required time and available slots, ability to view/edit notes in a separate window, option to calculate project progress by the time required for the project, and many more.

So I guess, I'm happy to upgrade and support the team and put my faith in them for the development cycle of MLO6

I'm also disappointed with MLO 6. Doesn't seem like there are any new features, just a reskinned custom view and triggers? I don't get the point of triggers.

Michael,

I'd be interested in an overview of your setup with a bit more detail if you're willing to share.  I have an approach that sounds somewhat similar, but have not used the mobile client and my method of filtering into the various statuses feels clunkier than how you described yours.  Thanks!

Michael, after trying out MLO 6 Beta I had similar thoughts. On the one hand, it is amazing that the MLO team managed to continue development at all, given the circumstances. On the other hand, these cannot have been the most longed for improvements, nor the most low hanging fruit.
  • Dark theme: ok, may be useful for some
  • Markdown: as  you mentioned, would make sense if it were WYSIWYG style. But I'm always in edit mode, so who am I formatting for?
  • Triggers and Actions: I still have hopes here. This could be made more useful if Actions would permit to either create/modify/delete tasks or pass task data to other applications (Outlook rules come to mind). As it is now, it's an expensive way to pat yourself on the back.
  •  Dashboard: don't rightly know what to do with it. There is already the option to open a view in a new window (F3) if needed. Based on the name, I had hoped for more visualization (pie chart for counters, gantt chart for projects, sunburst diagram for goals or the like).
  • Reminder window: haven't used that so far, as my tasks are not scheduled for a specific time.
So, apart from donating to the team, it's kind of hard to justify the expense.

Hi,

Glad to see I'm not the only one coming up with the similar observations and using the product the way I do. A bit more observations after using MLO 6.
  • Dashboard : Like you say Wolfgang, there was already the new window feature if tabs were not enough. Reason I will not use the dashboard is that you can't really edit much. No way to double-click, right click menu etc... Beside a grocery list, I rarely simply check mark a task as done. I need to enter a note, change the review date, refocus on the project top level to add, edit or remove tasks etc... All that is well served with what I had so far.
  • Trigger : Before, I had created some life habit tasks consisting of life habit recurrent messages every X, to be checked at the start of the day. So that shoulder tapping feature looked like a good replacement. But when you are in a mist of working, the gradual pop-pup gets disturbing at least with my set-up heavily using "Review". Will likely keep it for project completion but definitely not a cliff jumper for me.
  • Reminder window : Very minor change. 5.X type of.
@Michael : I don't see customer feedback as a NEGATIVE thing. Quite to the contrary, a client taking the time to share his thoughts and concerns is a POSITIVE. No one is bashing this app here. Personally, MLO remains my favorite task manager and certainly my most used app.

Regarding the Dashboard, does anyone know how to hide finished tasks or to zoom into a folder?  This is an absolute must for this tool to be of any use to me.
I cannot find anything in the help files.   I'm looking for any reason to buy this new upgrade but so far it's been frustration.

Hi.

My approach for zoom would be to go to the Main View and set in the Advanced Filter section “Top Level Folder Name=Joel’s Stuff”. That would just show me tasks from one folder.

To hide completed tasks, I do this:

  1. Since the view in the pane is set first in the Main Window, I
  2. Edit Advanced Settings and add “Complete=False”.  That will hide the completed tasks in the Main View and as well the Dashboard with the same view name.

As an aside, I have a dashboard that shows JUST completed tasks over the past hour, so that I can see my rate of accomplishment.  I only have true accomplishments set to “show completed tasks”; otherwise, “Have coffee” would be incorrectly shown as an accomplishment.

HTH.

Take Care,

Thanks for sharing your system, I didn't try the advanced settings using this approach.  I absolutely love the power that's built into this program!

I can´t believe that they still did not manage to replace this markdown thing with a normal wysisyg Editor. Who has the time to switch between Note and Edit Mode? That is so weird!

I tried this just now, it doesn't seem to work.
