Hi

To what extent is it possible to use MLO Android "hands free" e.g. whilst driving?

e.g. Today whilst on a long car journey, I wanted to enter about 5 tasks whilst driving my car. Have any of you MLO Android users worked out a safe why to do this?

On Android, only insofar as your keyboard provides a mic button for voice input in a given field.  There is no holistic voice input I'm aware where you could dictate eg. a task, with contexts, a due date/time and/or a reminder time and MLO would oblige.

On the iOS side I don't know but I don't think MLO is Siri integrated so it's probably quite the same.  I'm not sure siri does straight voice to type so they might not even have that on ios now that I think about it.

Hi John,

If you've got a recent version of Android and you've got Google Now enabled with voice prompt you can use: -

"Ok Google" wait for the tone, "Take a note", wait for the prompt and then dictate the task. Currently, the first time you use this it will ask which app you want to send the note to. The list I get includes task managers like Wunderlist but not MLO. I know you're in the Android Beta group so perhaps you could suggest this integration if you need it. In the meantime, you could send to another app and copy into MLO at a later time.

Don't forget the "only when it's safe and legal" advice - there is enough in-car distraction these days and that's from a long time road warrior who knows.

btw if you haven't tried it, the voice activation in android has always been good (far better than Siri) and it's recently become even better and faster - kudos to Google

Personally I'm not at all sure about Google Now, mainly for ideological reasons.

i.e.  Google already knows way more about effectively all of us than the Stasi, the KGB, the Gestapo/SS could ever have dreamed of. And we all know that the Google (which does 64% of all our searches) routinely assist intelligence agencies (FBI,MI5/MI6 etc) with their enquiries. And that is even before they get hacked a la Ashley Madison / NHS (8 million medical records) / eBay's 233 million users / ... Let alone the catastrophic crypto bug in OpenSSL itself.

Nope, it's just not healthy for one organisation to know quite so much about each of us.

So call me old fashioned, but I'm not so sure if I want to help Google even further with the level of privacy violation that Google Now seems to involve.

OK, I'll get off my soapbox now.

I'm familiar with the solution pottster mentioned, but I prefer using the MLO speech-to-task widget. On my longer commutes, I have the phone dash-mounted with CarHome Ultra running - shows time, temperature, speed, location, along with my choice of buttons. I hit the MLO widget, dictate, hit 'create', done. My note winds up in the MLO Inbox. I'd like the widget better if I could let it timeout and not have to hit 'create'.

Does a "MLO speech-to-task widget" actually exist? If so please can you tell us more about this - e.g. where to find it?

OK I tried installing "CarHome Ultra". I set the MLO (2) widget on it's home page. But when I hit the MLO widget, it seems to be expecting text input rather than voice...

When you place the widget, be sure to specify the "Action on shortcut" to be "Add Task by Voice".

OK thanks yes that is quite cool...

So here's the sequence:

1. Either
A) Hit CarHome Ultra icon
        OR
    B)
    a) Double-click the Home button and
    b) say "hi galaxy" to get the microphone icon to turn on (go turquoise) [this often fails to work, in which case hit microphone icon]
    c) say "open Car Home Ultra)

2. then Click MLO icon
3. Talk name of your task
4. Hit "Create"

However is still a fairly manual process, because you have to click both the MLO icon *and* Create every time you add a new task.
Is there a more hand-free way to do this?

e.g. Is there any way to enter multiple tasks at once?

If I'm following this discussion correctly,  you need to sponsor a recommendation that input timeout while dictating will be processed as "create"

Interestingly, Google announced improved voice interaction for app developers in Android 6 (Marshmallow)  at their press conference last week. The relevant bit is here.

Definitely something for the MLO android devs to capitalize on.

There's another option that I use, using the task-by-email:

  1. Say "Ok Google"
  2. "Send an email to MLO"
  3. Then just say the task you want to add.

Works really well. :)

Back on this hands-free mode topic .......
Would there be any enthusiasm for a really small widget with the voice input microphone on?
Android v1.6 had a 4x1 widget, which sat the the bottom of my home screen very nicely
Android v2 has a 2x2 widget, which is a bit larger than I'd like (and which shows tasks in the inbox - I don't need that)
For me, a 1x1 widget would be perfect, and 2x1 would be very welcome.

Regards

Wol

Hi, Wol. I've never used this but it might be what you want.

Find a 1x1 item in the widget drawer called "MLO Shortcut" or "shortcut MLO". After installing it you should get a setup screen. Tap on "action" or "software action" or something like that and select "Add task by voice"

I'm a bit of a geek, so I've built my own little solution using Tasker with AutoVoice and AutoInput plug-ins.

I set AutoVoice so that I can say 'Add new Task', then it listens for the task name. AutoInput will open the MLO shortcut popup, enter what I said and save it to MLO.

However this solution requires a lot of technical knowledge plus a rooted phone.

I hadn't considered the email solution, which is much simpler.

Good call.

You're among friends, we're all geeks here. Tasker is great; do you use it for anything else with MLO?

I'm interested in learning about options such as this, but have no experience with Tasker. I'd really like to be able to create some voice commands (or shortcuts) to create new MLO tasks in certain preset folders. Would you mind sharing your Tasker/AutoInput/AutoVoice configurations?
Thanks,
Bob
