I don't believe that Grouping shows tasks under inherited contexts, because then tasks would be shown multiple times. Since Contexts can be included by many other contexts (it's more of a web than a tree) it would get really messy. Also, when you drop a task onto a group it assigns that context so it would be strange to have tasks in that list that don't actually have that context.

But if you limit your Context filter to only include "@Errands" you will see all contexts that @Errands includes, which at least for me is where it's usefulness comes in.

(I'm not sure if Contexts inherit open/closed status. I suppose they can't because of the multiple parent thing...)

I don't see the "Active Actions by Context" the way that I expect. I am running the latest version of MLO for MS Windows, v3.6.2.
I have a context "@Errands" which includes the context "@Shopping", and another "@Anywere" which included the context "@Phone calls". These four contexts are set to to have always open hours except for @Errands, which is set to non-work hours.

When I look at the default To-Do  view "Active Actions by Context" I had expected the @Anywhere context to include all phone call tasks, and the @Errands view to include all shopping tasks, but this is not so. Phone calls and shopping tasks only appear in their own contexts. Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks in advance!
Matthew

Thanks for the reply Lisa,

If that is the case, then what exactly does the feature do?

If I hit F8 to get the "Manage Contexts" settings window, and set some
context to be included by another; what changes?
If grouping by context does not include sub-contexts, what is
affected?

Thanks again,
Matthew

She's just answered you ;
set a filter (left panel) to a specific context, and in your list, you will see your task, grouped by context, limited to the filtered context (the one you choose and its included ones)

Thanks robisme...I was in the middle of a further reply and never finished.

You can filter on the parent contexts (the main point), and I think it also allows for some inheritance, such as location on Android.

I'm not sure why you want to see them in the groupings. I wouldn't want to. The same task might show up many, many times, because contexts can be included by multiple parents and can include multiple children, plus tasks can have many contexts. I think it would be awfully confusing. Already, tasks are listed once for every actual context because a task can be in multiple contexts at once.

Maybe there is a better way to do what you would like to do? If you are trying to see all of your tasks that you can do anywhere (inherited), regardless of their assigned context of "Phone Calls" etc, use a flat list such as Active Actions and click on "Anywhere" in the context list (or filter on Anywhere in Android). They will all be in a list together, and you can put "Context" as one of the display columns if you want to see their assigned contexts.  If you want to have it be a permanent view, simply save the view (on the desktop).

I would like to see included contexts in the standard "Active Actions by Context" view.

It would be helpful, because:
  • if you use category inclusions to form a hierarchy, you won't be able to see tasks in the upper level hierarchies in your standard contexts views
  • creating a separate view for every upper level category is inconvenient
  • a general "contexts view" is a good for a quick overview of tasks, that's it's strength -- rather than having filters for each context individually

I don't see it as inconvenient, because:
  • you can collapse any category if it is obstructing your view
  • redundancies already appear for tasks assigned multiple categories

For me 'Included contexts' also turned out to be a disappointment. I created a context 'inTheCity' which included 3 contexts of 3 different towns I can go to.The reason I did that was to receive nearby alert each time I'm in one of them (no matter which one). Of course this feature turned out to work differently than I supposed and for me  - as I said - it makes it, well maybe not useless, but certainly less usefull... The other thing here is that 'Nearby alerts' keep notifying each time I move few meters so they suck anyway...

Robert, in the beta testing of nearby notifications, several people complained that included contexts don't work. The most popular example is that I need to buy something from a hardware store. There are three hrdware stores that I pass frequently. When I am near any one of them I want to be reminded of the item I need to buy. Andre replied that included contexts were not implemented in nearby at this time. You would have to submit an enhancement request. If you do, I would vote for it.

The business about excessive alarming is different. I'm pretty sure it's a bug, related to inappropriate use of the geofencing API. I have reported it in the past and I will report it again when the next Android version hits beta.

Hi,

I didn't see your topic before.. I was going to move my votes to your topic but then I thought to leave my topic as well. For now it doesn't matter whether I move my votes or not as the number of votes the original topic has collected is very small. Maybe the new one manages to attract more interst :)
