Better control of collapse/expand needed ==> I want to improve the hotkey [Control] / [']

[Windows MLO]

Hello

I am finding the way MLO handles collapse and expand of subtasks to be irritating.

At present the hotkey [Control] / ['] toggles between expanding or collapsing ALL subtasks below the selected task. This can be useful to quickly open the full tree to see what is there, but if you so, you have then lost how things were before.  In a large complex tree this can be irritating, because you may well have collapsed certain tasks deliberately, because they are not relevant/important right now, and they were wasting precious screen space!

May I request that the hotkey [Control] / ['] toggles between THREE statuses.
1) Expand the full tree of subtasks
2) Close the full tree
3) Put it back to what it was like before you just hit the hotkey! [Control] / [']

J

P.S. Fwiw, I can not use that actual hotkey Control / '  because it is used by my clipboard manager Ditto. So I personally I have re-mapped it to Control/Shift/D   (memonic: "D for down")

Hello,

Ok, these are not axactly xhat you want, bu you can:
- use the hotkeys to "show level 1", "show level 2" up to 4 levels can be assigned.
- use a hotkey to "collapse all but selection" which is very helpful also.

The expand/collapse short cut key working on the entire outline is becoming very frustrating.  Is there an option that I'm missing to expand only the one level deep and leave all the nested tasks within that level collapsed?

Example:

When I click the expand/collapse hotkey on Projects I get this.

Projects
   Revenue
      Revenue 1
         Task 1
         Task 2
         Task 3
      Revenue 2
         Task 1
         Task 2
         Task 3
   Profit
     Profit 1
         Task 1
         Task 2
         Task 3
      Profit 2
         Task 1
         Task 2
         Task 3

I want this

Projects
   Revenue
   Profit

I can then use the arrow keys to work through the outline opening and closing using the hotkey without the entire outline exploding open.

Am I missing this option or has it been overlooked?

David

Hello David,

Looking at the menu (under View-Collapse/Expand) there are fixed shortcut keys (not adjustable Hotkeys):

Ctrl+Alt+1 for Level 1
Ctrl+Alt+2 for Level 2
Ctrl+Alt+3 for Level 3

As I recall, there's also a Hotkey for collapsing the entire outline, as well as one for expanding the current branch.

Hope that helps,
Stéph

I can add and modify these shortcuts under Tools -> Options -> Hotkeys
(MLO 4.4.0). But unfortunately, neither the shortcuts nor the menu
entries are working for me.

You're right, Christoph.  I've just tried it and I can change the hotkeys, but the action is wrong.  Ctrl+Alt+1 opens the first sub-level of the branch I have selected, rather than opening everything to level 1.  I'll post it as a bug report for the development version.

I'm aware of these but they aren't a good option. I don't want to count the level I'm on than pick the correct key. It's just too slow.

Thanks, hadn't noticed this. In fact these actions work relatively to
the selected task. I just had no task selected, and then they do
nothing. A good fix would be to keep the old behavior, but when no task
is selected, they should use absolute levels instead.

I think the left arrow closes and right arrow opens a branch, one level at a time.
