Hi, I'm loving MLO, but I have a couple kinks I need to work out.

What is the fastest way to get an item into it's proper outline category? I pretty much do everything in outlines, mostly in Word, so I've come to think that way. Can any users share their efficiency tips for item input? I need to get items into outline sections such as "Business / Clients"

I remember Grandview had a dropdown list that allowed you to assign the position of an item, and this was really fast.

I'm also wondering about controlling the outline view. Is there a fast way to set the depth of the outline view on the fly?

If these two features are not so efficient, I would give them a high priority for future versions.

Thanks for any tips!

Hi, Robert

To add tasks to a particular folder, two suggestions:

1.       Bring up the Rapid Text Entry window (for instructions see the User Manual or come back here and ask). Click the Parent button, select the destination folder, then enter your tasks

2.       Quickly navigate to the destination folder by collapsing your outline (F6) then clicking on the top-level parent you want, then the second-level parent etc. until you reach your destination folder. Click on the “create subtask” button (just to the right of the Big Red Button in the toolbar) (or Alt-Ins if you prefer keyboard) and enter your first task. Use the Big Red Button (or Ins) for subsequent tasks

For depth of outline, first become familiar with F6 and F7 for collapse all and expand all. Go to Tools>Options>Hotkeys and scroll down to the View section, then scroll down more to find four entries for Level-1 through Level-4. You have to assign a hotkey sequence to these before they become usable, be sure to avoid key sequences that are already assigned, in MLO or in Windows. You might also want to check out zoom-in.

A million thanks! This is exactly what I needed to know. There was so much to absorb just to get started, I was dreading hunting for info I wasn't sure existed. :>)

I really appreciate your precision! And I'm so glad MLO has been developed this far.

MLO's move is also super handy: Select a task you want to reparent, hit ^M, then type the name of the parent, then enter. You can also choose what view the move dialog uses also. So you can just select from a view of just projects/folders/etc.

Because move is so quick my preferred approach is to just put items in <Inbox> all day, then use move to put them in the right place (and set their priority) once a day during review.

Also note that the Parent sub-dialog of the Rapid Text Entry dialog can be set to use specific view also (just like the move dialog).

Replying to an old thread...how can the Parent sub-dialog of the Rapid Text Entry dialog be set to use specific view? I see a view name but no way to change it.

Lisa,

01. Enter Rapid Task Entry pop up box. ( I assign a double tap HOME key to call upon the pop up using AutoHotkey)
02. Click "Parent..." button. MLO tree window will pop up.
03. On the top of the tree, right below "Hide completed task", you'll see "View:*All Task>>"
04. Click on "View:*All Task>>" to change views. :-)

My AutoHotkey script:
;========================================
; MY LIFE ORGANIZED HOTKEY
;========================================
;Hotkeys to open MyLifeOrganized:
Home:: ; Open Rapid Task Entry Dialog
If (A_PriorHotKey = "Home" AND A_TimeSincePriorHotkey < 500)
Send ^+!m ;You must set this in MLO under Tools > Options > Rapid Task Entry dialog
return
