I've used MLO for years and finally got an iPad, so I looked at the current iPad support, and it looks like the current v1 program on the Apple store is on sale (half price) with the remaining half due when the update comes out. Actually, that isn't a bad deal, provided that the current version has the functionality I really need and an update is coming soon. Thus, I have some questions, which I hope the folks on the forum can answer for me.

1) How usable is the current iPad program for my purposes? I make rather modest use of MLO's capabilities, so maybe it will work for me. What I need is the following: the ability to organize 200 or so tasks with a moderate amount of nesting, deal with due dates and recurring tasks, and maintain two basic lists by context (work, home). I don't really use the todo functionality, which is where a lot of the complexity resides, so if that isn't up to snuff then I'm OK with that.

2) I have heard that some people are using the newer iPhone v2 program? If so, how well does that work on the iPad?

3) If the iPhone program is a lot better, and I did buy the iPhone v2 program, is there any way to switch to the iPad? This is more a question for Andrey than the forum, I guess, but some guidance would be nice.

4) Finally, I'm sure Andrey has gotten a lot of inquiries, but do we have any idea when the new iPad version will be out?

I like MLO a lot and am willing to buy the iPad app + cloud sync, but I need to know whether it's a good option for me in the near term.

Thanks,
Robert Lusian

Hello Robert,

Here are my opinions:

1) The current iPad version will cover what you want to do. However, if your task list grows or you want to use any other functionality, then the iPhone version runs rings around it. For me (with many more than 200 items in my outline), the search function in the iPhone version is absolutely essential. There are lots of other excellent features (like 'move' and the wonderful Magic Navigation button) which also make it the current version of choice for all iOS devices.

2) I'm one of them. Even if I didn't have a (company-issued) iPhone, I'd be choosing the iPhone v2 over the iPad v1.

3) Andrey will have to answer whether iPad v2 would detect iPhone v2 already installed and offer you a discount. I suspect that it wouldn't, though.

4) Another one for Andrey. I don't know how much work there is in porting the new iPhone v2 over to the iPad screen.

If it's any help, my logic was that iPad v1 turned out to be unusable with a large outline and I wanted to start using the iPhone v2 functionality straight away. I decided that a $10 hit didn't amount to much when spread over several weeks, especially when ofsetting against it the productivity benefits.

Of course, the new iPad version may only be a few weeks away, especially for beta testers, in which case you might kick yourself if you went ahead and bought the iPhone version…

Thanks for the info!

When you say you are using the iPhoneV2 version, are you using it on the iPhone or the iPad? I've heard that iPhonev2 runs on the iPad, and I was wondering how well. As you have noted, the cost of the app is fairly minimal in the grand scheme of things.

I have the iPad v1 and the iPhone v2 beta on my iPads and much prefer to use the iPad version. Although there's some useful functionality in the iPhone beta, the iPad version makes so much better use of the screen real estate when reviewing the tasks, especially in outline mode. The iPhone version just looks like a bloated phone even on the iPad Mini.

One real problem with the iPad version is the bugs in some of the date based views which means not all relevant tasks are shown. The other annoyance is the swipe to indent/outdent which can very easily wreck a structured tree.

I'm hoping the iPad v2 beta will come soon to fix these issues and bring dome good stuff from the iPhone version.

In the meantime I think the Android version is the best mobile MLO, especially on the Sony Xperia Z Ultra.

Hello Robert,
I'm using the iPhone version 2 on my iPad (although I actually use it more on my iPhone) in preference to iPad v1, although I understand Nick's point about iPhone apps looking bloated and not making much of the screen space on an iPad..

Stop Press: Andrey has just started talking about potential features for the iPad, over on the beta testers' forum, so the wait for iPad v2 may not be soooo long. We'll see.

I would be willing to sign up for iPad v2 beta testing if Andrey has extra slots available - do I sign up on the standard beta team form or somewhere else?
I'm a software developer and so would make a pretty good beta tester.

Hello Robert,

MyLifeOrganized for iPhone and MyLifeOrganized for iPad are separate products with lots of independent work put in each one and with consideration of the user experience tuned for each device type.
After releasing of MLO for iPhone we are now working almost full time on MLO for iPad and on custom views for both platforms.
So MLO for iPhone and MLO for iPad are separate purchases and you cannot switch from one product to another.

Frankly I do not know. We are working hard to release MLO for iPad it as soon as possible.
