Hello-

I am trying to (re)sync my PC and iPhone today.  I just set up MLO to sync between the 2 devices via WIFI yesterday and it worked fine both on the PC & phone.  I got the phone to sync by using the 'reset sync' on the phone.  There's a note that it should not be used all the time.  When I went to sync the PC yesterday; I did use the sync button and configured something - but not entirely sure how it was done.

So; I think I do not have something set up properly.

Within the PC, under Options, Tools, WIFI Sync; my PC and iPhone show synced.

Question: Every time I want to use either my phone or the PC; do I need to sync first?  I suspect so.

On the PC, when I click the sync icon; it is asking me to configure the way I sync, although I did something to this screen yesterday.

I am not sure of the values that should be used when I select 'Alternative ways to sync', on the 'sync profile' screen.  Here's what I have, but I think it's incorrect.  I don't want to sync to another file on my PC.  I don't know how to update the PC when I use my phone to complete tasks.

When I try to sync on my iPhone using the sync button on the phone; it says it 'cannot connect to PC'.

The program is open on my PC and on my phone when I try to sync either way.  Neither are exchanging info.

Thanks in advance.

Did you check that the IP address of the PC to which the iPhone tries to sync is correct?  On the PC, look at Tools/Options/WiFi synchronisation and check "Your computer IP(s)".  Then on the iPhone, look at Settings/synchronisation/WiFi/ and check that the PC IP address is the same as you saw on the PC.  If it is not, change it to the IP address shown on the PC and try to sync again.

(Depending on how your network is set up, if you shut down the PC it may start up again with a different IP address, which will confuse the WiFi sync.  There are ways to try and prevent this happening, which may involve adjusting the settings in the WiFi router.)

You don't have to re-sync every time you want to use the PC or iPhone.  Provided you don't modify the same task on both you should not have any problems.  However, if you do a lot of changes on the PC and on the iPhone versions of your file, it would certainly be a good idea to sync reasonably often.  I sometimes go for a few days without syncing, because I tend to make most changes on the PC as tasks get completed, and use the iPhone to enter new tasks which come up while I am travelling, or occasionally to mark off tasks as complete while travelling.  If you make changes on the iPhone then they will be copied over to the PC when you tap on the "WiFi sync" button on the iPhone.

The sync icon on the PC version is to allow synchronising by other means (ie not through WiFi).  If you want to just use WiFi sync I would avoid it. Synchronisation profiles etc are described in the help file.

As Martin says, it's most likely to be that your PC's IP address has changed.

My home WiFi reassigns IP addresses pretty infrequently.  It's a different story in the office, where my PC gets a new IP address every day.  So, I then have to go into Tools-Options and check the IP address on my PC and then change it in the Sync settings on my iPhone.  The problem with having to change the sync address is that MLO doesn't know whether you're syncing with a new outline on a new PC. Any differences between that PC and the iPhone that it spots get flagged up as an alert and, if you've been making changes on both devices, you have to go through and make sure it's chosen the right version of the truth for each item. The best thing to do is to sync just before you shut your PC down, then sync again as soon as you switch on, so you know that any changes in-between will be on the iPhone version.

Thanks for the help Martin.  I didn't realize an IP address could change and that explained why it did sync initially and then stopped.

This morning's sync did send me back in time to previously completed tasks.  So; I will just complete tasks on my PC and view on my phone.  Strange that syncing is so painful for this program.  Otherwise; it works great and I really love it.  Hopefully a future release improves the WIFI syncing.

Thanks much- it solved my syncing.  :}

Best regards, Lisa

Hello again Lisa. Yes, the WiFi sync is a lot more difficult to manage than it should be - If only the MLO file held an ID code to identify that it was the sync'd version, rather than relying on the volatile IP address.

Anyway, my workaround is only to do the synching when I'm at home on my nice, stable IP address, or to remember to synch before leaving home and sync again at the office, before I do any edits on the desktop. If you do that, then you can keep edits on both devices in synch during the working day.

The other option is to go for the Cloud synch, at the cost of one cup of coffee a month. I only don't do that because I store sensitive notes about my whereabouts and commercial discussions in my outline and I don't trust online services with no encryption, which could be obvious targets for hackers. (in truth, though, my home PC is probably more at risk than Amazon's servers).

Hello Stéphane-

I didn't post a reply yesterday- but I did try your & Martin's suggestions and they worked well.  Thanks to you both.  I was conscious of using one device for changes, then synced before I used the other device.  No conflicts and no issues with losing my IP address.

With that awareness; it really wasn't difficult to change devices.

Thanks again & have a great day!

Best regards, Lisa
