Just came to know that Darryl D'Monte has passed away. May his soul rest in peace. One of our finest environmental crusaders and journalists.

It was only till two days ago he posted about the coast road and there was some discussion on the other wise silent group. About 10 days back he had replied in another discussion.

I grew up reading many an informative article by him and will still have cuttings from 90s.

Dear Rishi,

I was going to phone you to know what happened, because I had seen the post on coastal road you have mentioned.

It's a terrible loss to journalism and civic activism for the cause of environment protection.

Darryl was a man of passion, conviction, deep knowledge and deep love for Nature.

And he was such a gentle soul.

May his soul rest in peace.

Regards,
Sudheendra

Hello Sudheendraji,

I am yet to know the exact reason. I believe he had suffered with cancer a few years ago (which was not spoken about much) but recovered. Maybe there were some complications this time around. I have not been active off late and so interactions with him had been few and far in between. I think he was among the more regular people to post on this group so there will be further silence.

He was a strong part of the civic activism landscape and it will feel difficult to acknowledge his absence for a while though most of civic activism has anyways been falling apart in the past few years. The coast was very dear to him and he (all of us) had been on the loosing end on that front.

While on the coast I am reminded of one of the more memorable of last interactions with him in the last few years. https://youtu.be/DmR1_vnWQNI

In 2017 we were on a panel discussion to discuss Amitav Ghoshs book where I think I was harsh over all on the support more for journalists and writers and less for activists who actually work on the issues nuts and bolts.

Regards,
Rishi

I had known Darryl from his days in Indian Express. Though I was not an activist in the conventional sense, Daryl was very friendly with me. He invited me as a speaker when his book on textile mills was launhed. I last saw him Bhubneshwar in 2016 in a workshop on regional planning.
A genuine, knowledgeble but yet a humble soul. May he rest in peace.
