Dear Mr Shenoy and friends,

Given the sizable objections to the coastal road, both on ground and online, I am very keen to know of any work done by city-based think tanks and NGOs on this issue - particularly those bodies associated with work on urban transport, environment, heritage, slum and livelihoods.

Do you think it is a good idea for MTF to maximise the outreach of such research? It could encourage such bodies to publish more frequently and contribute more strongly to the momentum against this project. Or identify those important organisation who have not yet lent their voices against the coastal road and work to bring them on-board? Perhaps it is a good idea for all relevant NGOs and Think Tanks to publish a declaration/ statement and maybe even hold a press conference. With elections around the corner, this could have a significant impact in at least stalling physical progress.

Personally, I feel it is equally important to identify those organisations that are deliberately shying away from taking a stand or even supporting the coastal road (if such a thing were even possible). While everyone is entitled to their opinions, it is important to make your stand known and not remain comfortable in skirting such a critical issue for Mumbai.

Please let me know your views on this matter.

Best,

Gautam

Dear Gautam,
Fully agree. There are sporadic efforts by individual organisations or even resident associations to express their opposition but there is no concerted joint movement on this issue like the Aarey Metro shed etc.
We can meet at ORF or some other suitable place to decide action. Pl call me.

Yes, would be great.

Looking forward, will connect who ever I know in the coastal group to connect.

Meanwhile,
The supreme court has directed metro to explain why other sites cannot be used for the metro car shed. The matter has been listed for next Monday.

Best,
Yash

Dear Gautam

This is in response to your mail and you may be surprised by my opinion on the issue of Coastal Road, which I had presented on behalf of MTSU (and I still support our arguments) at the mock trial which was organized by the NGOs opposing the Coastal Road sometime in 2016-or 2017. by Late Darryl DeMonte at Bandra. I still have the presentation and would like to discuss the same, in case anyone is interested. My views are also published in the book of the above proceedings. I was sorry to learn about Darryl's sad demise and could not attend the condolence meeting as was not in Mumbai.

Surprised with your email Gautam. This is like Rip van Winkle. You seem to have no clue of the efforts in the whole of this decade. Unless there is some other motive for restarting the efforts.

This ship has sailed.

Also because I was surprised seeing the email I replied. I do not wish to be further involved in the coast road issue in any way.

Darryl had posted last month about the BC and SF residents efforts which had got be again surprised and replying.

Dear Mrs. Mahajan,

Thank you for the response. I would be very grateful if you could share the presentation mentioned in your email. For the many citizens opposed to this project, there are also citizens who support the idea of the coastal road in the image of Mumbai as a World Class City. The idea of having apolitical, expert opinions through a single window like MTF, is to keep the citizenry informed and updated on a project that will literally reshape the city irreversibly.

What tends to also happen (in my opinion) in sporadic oppositions, is the crest of such waves are shortlived. There is also a tendency to focus on singular aspects of the development like congestion or marine ecosystems or livelihoods and the bigger picture does not get imprinted the way it ought to. I also feel there is a lot of room for more research on the subject including the wider and more long-term repercussions of this project. These can serve as strong reference points for any future analysis of this project and help to formulate policy across such developments so that the benefits of this struggle can be gained by other cities with similar ambitions.

Warmly,
Gautam

Thank you. Look forward to synergy and a wider connection on both issues.
