Dear all,

Hope everyone is doing well during this COVID pandemic!

I just installed mumax3 and CUDA in my windows PC and want to do some simulation. Being a complete beginner and without having any prior experience on  Command Prompt, I have no idea how to start with running a mumax simulation. Could you guys please help me with some information on how to write the script for simulation and then run it? It will be really helpful. Then I will try to go through the examples and will be able to explore on my own, I think.

Thanks a lot for your help.

Best wishes
Pradeep

To run mumax3.10 you need
  • An NVIDIA GPU with at least a compute capability 3.0
  • An up to date NVIDIA driver (compatible versions given below)
  • Optional: gnuplot for plots in the web GUI
Note that you do not need to install the cuda libraries or the cuda toolkit to run mumax3.10!

The following steps might help you to get mumax3.10 up and running in windows (tested on windows 10).

1. Find out the nvidia driver version

Right-click on your desktop and open the nvidia control panel. You should now see the driver version number.

2. Download mumax3.10

Download the mumax3.10 executable for your driver from https://mumax.github.io/download.

3. Unzip the downloaded file

Unzip the downloaded file in any directory you want. For the sake of the instructions here, I will assume you unzipped the file in C:\Users\JohnDoe\mumax3.10. The full path of the executable is now C:\Users\JohnDoe\mumax3.10\mumax3. Note that the directory also contains dll files. It is important that these cuda library files stay in the same directory as the mumax3 executable.

4. Update the Path environment variable

Add the directory to the Path environment variable by following these instructions. (Note that you have to add the directory of the executable, not the path of the executable itself)

5. Test mumax3

Open powershell or the command prompt (I recommend to use powershell). You can now run mumax3 by typing "mumax3". To open the web GUI, type "mumax3 -i".

6. Running a mumax3 script

To run a mumax3 script, let's say C:\Users\JohnDoe\Documents\script.txt, you first need to navigate to the directory of the script:
cd C:\Users\JohnDoe\Documents

You can then run the script using the following command:
mumax3 script.txt

7. Optional: install gnuplot

Download and install gnuplot. During the installation, make sure that you check the option to add the executable to the Path environment variable. If you forgot to check this option, you can do this manually in the same way as described in step 4.

Dear Jeroen,

Thanks a lot for the detailed information. It really helped and I can run mumax now. I am not so familiar with the Command Prompt and I think it will take me some time to grasp it completely. However, thanks a lot again for all the information.

Best wishes
Pradeep

Hi guys,

I'm having porblems to get mumax running. I followed all the instructions but I'm getting the error codes, no matter what I do. I tried to use just mumax3, but it doesn't start at all (problem.png). I also tried mumax3-server and I could see that it was doing something, but still with an error code in the end (problem2.png). Somehow it worked for 2 codes, but when I changed some of the variables it wouldn't run again. Do you have any idea what I can try to solve the problem?

Thank you for your help.

Best regards
Lukas

Hello Lukas
I advise you to try an alternative way.
First of all download the zip file from mumax site
Then create a folder to desktop and unzip the files over there.
Last but not least in the folder develop your file with txt. Save the file without the extension of .txt
Run this file with the mumax3.exe
Enjoin your project !
