Drone Testing

Hello all,

To better understand detection probabilities around two Motus towers set up by Audubon Canyon Ranch on Tomales Bay in Marin County, California, we carried tags on drones and put together the short report attached here. Of course, we expect signals from a tag attached to a drone won't be perfectly representative of a tagged animal, but feel it is an exercise worth sharing with anyone interested in developing protocol for testing towers.

We have talked with several other Motus researchers in California and the west about ways we might standardize manageable testing protocols across stations likely to detect species associated with a few projects. We would be interested to hear about how other researches have managed testing the system, so please feel free to use this thread as a place to contribute your thoughts and experiences on the subject. Thanks for sharing this great report. I have been collaborating with radio astronomers at the University of Rhode Island on similar types of efforts here in the Atlantic. Erik Carlson (PhD student) just wrote a short paper about it, link here: https://arxiv.org/pdf/2207.02656.pdf

Does anyone have experience attaching tags to Peregrine Falcons? MOTUS indicates about 10 have been tagged, primarily to the Harrisburg PA birds. I'm looking for information about what tags are used, how they are attached, what they cost etc. Info much appreciated at the email below.

Is GPS tagging with 4G connection not a more straightforward way to
obtain data of fly behaviour of Peregrines? Just my two cents...

I agree with Rene. I suggest you check out the websites of some of the wildlife telemetry companies. Peregrines are large enough to handle GPS tags.
