Motus stations at Universities?

Hi everyone,

We have interest from a researcher at Oregon State University who would like to potentially install a station on campus. There are some general questions about campus facilities department and potential IT concerns with having the station connected directly to an LAN cable etc...has anyone else installed a tower at a university campus? We're looking for someone to help anticipate some potential hurdles that might be present with this type of installation. Yep, we installed one a couple of years ago in NJ on the roof of a building in campus. Plenty of issues with facilities haha, I would be happy to chat about everything.

Hi Jen,

Same here in Gatineau, Québec (Canada) - our antenna is on the roof of the Université du Québec en Outaouais.

Lots of negotiations were required, surprisingly, even if we had the support of the local biology professor.

We were not allowed to connect to the LAN and download the data remotely, which is unfortunate.  Also, we had unexpected costs of an electrician hired from the University to bring power on the roof - very expensive!!

We pushed for this location because it has an ideal location - along a major migration corridor (Ottawa river) and on top of a hill...so it was worth the pain.

Hi Jennifer,

My lab at the University of Delaware was able to install a Motus receiver on the roof of one of our campus buildings. We went a less traditional route and worked through our university's Amateur Radio Club to install our antennas right next to theirs. This sort of bypassed all the university bureaucracy, but still ensured we installed everything correctly according to the club's safety protocols. We were able to connect to the building's electricity, but we still went for a mobile data connection option.
