Hi all,

For a project we decided to use DBAAS solution and we came across to Atlas and after reading docs we realised that Atlas have a backup/recovery mechanism
but we have a question about this mechanism which is very important for us. Below are our questions :

* what is the difference between replica set and Atlas backup mechanism ?

* if we want to use sharding will we able to use backup/recovery mechanism ? if yes how will be able to recover ? i mean for example
if we had 4 shards all shards failed completely how will we recover from this with backups ?

* If we want to use replica set will we able to upgrade disk size in time ?

* Last question is i read that continuous backup mechanism charging is different than the actual data usage charging,
can anybody give me an example billing about 100GB data backup ?

Thanks for any replies,

Best Regards,
Tayfun

Hi Tayfun,

I'd like to help you with some of these questions. In order:
  • In short, replicas are for high availability, while the backup system is offsite from your Atlas cluster. The replicas are there so if your primary changes for any reason, there's another primary ready to go. The backups are there in case the entire replica set fails, or if you just want to grab a local copy of your data.
  • Atlas's continuous backup and recovery mechanism works with sharded clusters just as it does for replica sets. Here's some more information about how it works and how to use it: https://docs.atlas.mongodb.com/backup/continuous-backups/
(Cloud provider snapshots, currently only available on Azure clusters, are not supported for sharded clusters at this time)
  • Yes, you can adjust any cluster parameter, from disk size to instance type, at any time. You can even add sharding after the fact.
  • The continuous backup mechanism is charged based upon the logical uncompressed data + index size. If you have 100 GB of data+indexes stored in your cluster, and you back it up using the default schedule, it will cost $250/month

Hello Peter ,

I found your reply very helpful . I have a couple of more questions on this topic.

if I subscribe to a continuous back up plan and the average growth of my data is about 5 GB every month ; how does the billing work . Assuming that I start with 0 GB , can you please help me on how it is calculated?

Thanks in Advance.

Sri.

Hi Sri,

Thanks for the updated question.

Billing runs every day, so assuming uniform growth, let's say for the first month you go from 0 GB to 5 GB data size. This means your average data size for that month would be 2.5 GB. Your first GB is free, so 1.5 GB * $2.50/GB = $3.75 for that month. Your next month you would go from 5 to 10 GB, average size of 7.5 GB, billed size of 6.5 GB, or $16.25, and so on. To be as clear as possible, this assumes uniform growth, and that the sizes you quoted also include index sizes.

Let me know if you have any questions or comments about this.

Regards,

-Peter
