mongorestore --filter removed in 3.0

To my surprise and difficulty, I found out this morning that --filter is removed from mongorestore > 2.6.x. I have nightly processes that rely on a combination of mongodump and mongorestore with --filter. 

* Why was --filter removed?

* Why was there no deprecation in 2.6? I do not recall seeing a deprecation on this in the docs or the output from mongorestore.

* What is one to do in place of this?

All I've found so far in 3.x docs is mention that --filter was removed. That's it and it's not adequate.
