Hi,

I don’t understand this error message when I try to run MODFLOW-2005 (with FREEWAT/QGIS).

Do you know how to fix it?

___

MODFLOW-2005

U.S. GEOLOGICAL SURVEY MODULAR FINITE-DIFFERENCE GROUND-WATER FLOW MODEL

Version 1.11.00 8/8/2013

Using NAME file: orn1.nam

Run start date and time (yyyy/mm/dd hh:mm:ss): 2021/11/14 14:06:1

Thank you in advance.

Try using Modflow-OWHM within FREEWAT as the error may be related to MF-2005 and MF-OWHM has all its features and more

I don't see an error message here. This is just what MODFLOW normally prints at the beginning of the listing file.  There is a more recent version of MODFLOW-2005 than the one you are using.

THE FOLLOWING COMMENTS WERE PASSED TO THE ERROR ROUTINE

THE DESCRIPTION OF THE ERROR IS:

Failure to meet solver convergence criteria

Budget percent discrepancy is 0.1817664 %

The maximum allowed budget error is 0.0 %

To disable this stop/check use the BAS option "NO_FAILED_CONVERGENCE_STOP"

Or you can change the maximum allowed budget error is with the BAS option "STOPERROR" followed by the new max allowed error in percent.

Probably a geometry problem related to the Digital Elevation Model.

A budget percent discrepancy of 0.2 % is not a problem (I use MODFLOW to illustrate piezometry variations).

How to configure MODFLOW-OWHM to accept a 1% error ?

Thank you in advance.

Jean-Louis LENOBLE

Yes Richard FREEWAT includes Modflow-OWHM version 1 which includes the most recent version of MF-2005 plus lots of upgrades and fixes. I would used MF-OWHM from inside of FREEWAT!!

Yes you can specify the error tolerances with the new options in the Basic package Option block and can allow a larger volumetric error. We commonly do this during calibration and then tighten error criteria later. Error criteria should also consider the uncertainty of measured data. Also the warning file option of MF-OWHM is useful for finding specific cells and related boundary conditions that are contributing to local mass balance errors such as MNW2 or SFR2 properties.

That is great you are attempting to use OWHMv2 as version 1 is very out of date now and no longer supported.

Probably you have your solver criteria set to tight or their may be a model construction error that is causing the solver to fail to converge.

As the error messaged suggested you can force MODFLOW-OWHM2 to continue with the simulation when the solver fails by adding to the BAS package the keyword:
NO_FAILED_CONVERGENCE_STOP

or the keyword:
STOPERROR   X

where X is set to the minimum allowable mass error to continue if the solver fails to converge.
So:
STOPERROR  5

indicates that if the solver fails to converge, but the mass error is less than 5%, then the simulation will continue.

Personally I like to just use NO_FAILED_CONVERGENCE_STOP and then check the results after the simulation is complete and make sure the mass errors are acceptible.

To add these keywords you can either specify them along the options line, as described at (note this describes OWHMv1 but applies to v2):
(see data set 1)

or you can add to the start of the BAS package an Options Block, which is triggered by the word BEGIN OPTIONS and input reads one option per line until it sees the word END:

BEGIN OPTIONS
    NO_FAILED_CONVERGENCE_STOP
END

There are a number of useful options in version 2. A full listing of them are located at:

in the file:
BAS_Options_All.bas

and if you only want to see the most common options, then view:
BAS_Options_Recommended.bas

If you look in either of those files you will notice a keyword MAX_RELATIVE_VOLUME_ERROR
which has the following entry:
    # Define the maximum allowed relative volume error (MxRE), where the Relative volume error is: Cell_Volume_Error / Cell_Volume
    #          This is applied in addition to the standard solver criteria (HCLOSE and RCLOSE)
    #          MxRE = 0.025 is the default. Specify MxRE = 2.0 to disable (or any large number)
    MAX_RELATIVE_VOLUME_ERROR  MxRE

This is referring to an additional convergence  metric that was added to MODFLOW OWHM version 2 called Relative Volume Error

If the Relative Volume Error forces the model to do additional iterations, then a warning is raised to let you know and explains how to remove the requirement.

If you want to disable it, then just add the BAS option  and set MxRE to a very large number (eg "MAX_RELATIVE_VOLUME_ERROR   2.0"

The following is a screenshot from
Boyce, S.E., Hanson, R.T., Ferguson, I., Schmid, W., Henson, W., Reimann, T., Mehl, S.M., and Earll, M.M., 2020, One-Water Hydrologic Flow Model: A MODFLOW based conjunctive-use simulation software: U.S. Geological Survey Techniques and Methods 6–A60, 687 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/tm6A60

and explains it in detail the new metric:
OWHM Additional Conv Metric.png
What is designed to help with is the situation when the model converges and has a small mass error but if you compare that mass error to the volume of the cell it can be quite large.
That is because MODFLOW only checks the total mass error, which as a percentage relative to the entire model can be very small but when you focus on the specific location where the errors occur can  be quite large.

One last note, if you use Notepad++, I set up syntax highlighting for the MODFLOW-2005, MODFLOW-NWT, and MODFLOW-OWHM input files (they were designed for OWHMv2 but since OWHM is a superset of 2005/NWT it works for them too).

The files for that are in the doc folder of the OWHMv2 download, or you can view them here:
(note that Notepadpp_Syntax_Install.md explains how to install the syntax highlight and is viewable in the browser, but the download converts the file to a pdf instead of using markdown).

Hope that helps out,

Scott

Thank you.

I don't know enough about MODFLOW to access the “Basic package Option block” and specify the error tolerances …

I couldn't find anything in the MF2005 and MF-OWHM manuals. I probably didn't look in the right place! Can you guide me? Thank you very much and forgive me for all these questions!

Cheers,
