I wonder if someone could clarify the process of backing-up for me? As I understand it, there's no way of backing up automatically to the web, so one needs to back up to a USB drive or something similar. I've gone to what I take to be the relevant folder at C:\Users\<your user name>\AppData\Roaming\Mnemosyne and copied this folder to a memory stick. When I then put this in another computer and click on one of the Default files in the folder, I'm warned that I'm trying to open a Date Base file and asked which programme I want to use to open it. I'm not sure where to go from here, or indeed whether I'm doing the right thing in the first place. And if I am, do I have to keep copying the Mnemosyne folder to my flash drive every week or so to ensure that I don't lose too much in the event of my hard-drive crashing? I'd be most grateful for guidance that will make sense to someone with very little computer knowledge.

Hi,
You can just leave that backup sitting on an external drive without needing to open files. In case your HD fails, just copy over the folder from the external drive to your new HD.

Hi,
Thanks. Does the folder have to be copied to a particular place on the new hard drive? I downloaded Mnemosyne onto a second computer and it worked as expected, but when I copied the folder with my cards from the flash drive into the new Mnemosyne folder, it wouldn't work and just brought up an error message. Basically I haven't grasped how to make the cards backed up from one computer function on the other - assuming that I actually have backed up the cards by copying the folder from C:\Users\<your user
> > name>\AppData\Roaming\Mnemosyne. Sorry to be dense about this, but it's obviously rather crucial after spending a lot of time setting up the cards.

Hi,
As I mentioned earlier, you can just leave your backup on your 2nd drive sitting there without needing to open it in Mnemosyne.
If you need to use the backup later because your first HD crashed, copy back to your (new) first drive in the location you copied it from, and then use it in Mnemosyne in the first computer.
