Delete c:/users/aesimjee/appdata/roaming/Mnemosyne/config and the problem should disappear.

Hello

I also installed the latest version of Mnemosyne (2.3.1). Whenever I start it, I'm getting the following error :

"
An unexpected error has occurred.
Please forward the following info to the developers:
Traceback (innermost last):
File "mnemosyne, line 191, in <module>
File "mnemosyne\libmnemosyne\_init_.pyo", line 186 in initialise
File "mnemosyne\libmnemosyne\_init_.pyo", line 264, in activate components
File "mnemosyne\libmnemosyne\configuration.pyo",
File "mnemosyne\libmnemosyne\configuration.pyo", line 84, in activate
File "mnemosyne\libmnemosyne\configuration.pyo", line 221, in save
OperationalError: Attempt to write a readonly database
"

Also, there is no Mnemosyne folder located at C:/users/ADMIN/appdata/roaming/Mnemosyne

Can you please tell what may be causing the problem?

Thanks in advance

Are you trying to run e.g. from a write-protected Usb key? Also, depending on your computer, the location of the directory inside the user folder could be slightly different. Make sure to set up your explorer to display hidden files.

Good luck!

No. I am installing it from a setup downloaded from the net.
I tried searching it around but couldn't find the Mnemosyne folder inside appdata. Hidden files are already visible. My PC configs are Win7, 64-bit.

There's no folder 'Application Data' :(

Is this the very first time you try to run Mnemosyne? Perhaps you don't have write permissions in these directories at all.

Can you run a search for all directories called 'mnemosyne' on your system?

Yes, this is the first time I'm trying to install Mnemosyne. Sorry, I should have mentioned that in the beginning.
All the results after searching for 'Mnemosyne' in the system point to Mnemosyne folder in Program Files (x86).

Is it possible that you have a user account (not an "Administrator" account) and that Mnemosyne is trying to write to the Program Files folder?

The problem seems to be then that Mnemosyne tries to write its data in the directory I mentioned, but does not have permission there.

Can you double check if that directory is not accidentally write protected?

The directory is not write protected, but the Roaming folder is Read-only. I tried to uncheck the Read-only attribute, only for it to be checked again when I checked it afterwards. Then I tried to remove the Read-only attribute by the following in Command Prompt :
attrib -r +s C:\Users\ADMIN\Appdata\Roaming

After that I tried reinstalling Mnemosyne. Still, there is no Mnemosyne folder in Roaming. Also, now I am getting a different error while running Mnemosyne :
"

Hi,

Searching google for 'appdata roaming read only' turns up a lot of hits, so it's something that does seem to occur in other cases as well, but as far as I could see from quickly scanning through these hits, there is no obvious solution that works in all cases.

Anyhow, you can create a shortcut of Mnemosyne and then edit that shortcut to start Mnemosyne with the '-d <folder_name>' argument: that way you can set where Mnemosyne stores its data.

Cheers,

Peter

Can you please elaborate how to do this. I am still a noob at such things.

Hi,

Create a shortcut of Mnemosyne on your desktop. Right-click it, go to 'shortcut' and change 'target' to e.g.

"C:\Program Files (x86)\Mnemosyne\mnemosyne.exe -d C:\a\directory\where\you\have\write\access"

Cheers,

Peter

So changing the 'Target' field was giving me invalid directory error. So I changed the 'Start in' field to C:\Mnemosyne (I had copied the whole Mnemosyne folder to that location earlier)
Then I ran the shortcut as Administrator, it gave the same error. But for the heck of it, I ran it again and voila, it worked ! I have no idea what sorcery is going on but thanks a lot for your help Peter :)
