Hi there,

I'm a long time user of desktop Mnemosyne, and I just bought an android tablet and need to sync my flashcards.
I have read the Mnemosyne Project 'help with syncing' page, but I'm afraid it really leaves me none the wiser as to what I actually have to do, as I don't understand half of the terminology (server, client, "start from an empty database which has the same name as the server database", etc). I have literally no clue what any of that means.

Is there something I can read that will take me through it step-by-step?

Just in case it complicates matters, I am currently based in China, so I don't have access to the Google play store to download the latest version of the app, and I am using a VPN on all of my devices (does this have something to do with the server??).

I'm sorry if these are stupid questions to you, but the instructions on your site are very vague and not all of your users are tech literate.  (Other than that, I love the program, it's great work and easier to use than some alternative apps!)

Thanks in advance to anyone who can advise.

Ok, I have a worse problem now. Mnemosyne on my desktop won't even open at all:

Hi,

Which Mnemosyne version are you using? Make sure you download the latest version from our website.

Where is your database located? You seem to have gotten permission denied errors. Perhaps your database is on a USB key which no longer is inserted?

The correct way to use an USB key is described here:
http://mnemosyne-proj.org/help/running-usb-drive

After answering the above, to get rid of the error delete C:\users\victoria\AppData\Roaming\Mnemosyne\config, and config.db. It's a hidden directory, so you might need to change the settings in windows explorer to see it.

On to syncing: also here, make sure to download the latest version for both the desktop app ('server') and the android app ('client') (you don't need google play, you can download it from our website).

VPN issues might complicate stuff with respect to network access, and perhaps you might need to change the VPN network settings, but I can't help you there, I'm afraid. Better to ask on a forum related to your VPN.

Anyway, a simple way to test if network communication could work, go to 'settings - configure Mnemosyne - servers' , check 'allow remote review through a webserver'. Mnemosyne will tell you on which web address a server is running. Then, keep Mnemosyne running and open a regular browser on your android device where you type in this web address. If that works, then I can help you set up the sync server, so that you can use the faster native app.

Good luck!

Peter

Hi Peter,
Thanks for your response. The database was on my laptop's hard drive, not a USB, and it is the latest version of Mnosyne.

Because of VPN issues I was having difficulty accessing Google groups in order to read your reply, so in my impatience I uninstalled the program (after copying the files to a USB) and then reinstalled it.

On attempting to open the new, re-installed program, I immediately got another error message (perhaps it is the same one?):

I really hope I haven't lost all of my flashcards...

Hi again,

Sorry, I forgot to say that I followed your instructions to try and delete that file, but I couldn't find it in that location.

Victoria.

Could you show me a screenshot of what's in that directory? Perhaps you're looking in the wrong place?

Cheers,

Peter
