In fact, the rendering is done by a separate plugin called Gogorender:

It uses the Qt library that underlies Mnemosyne so the results are
high quality (practically identical to the desktop rendering) and
installation is simple (no additional dependencies).
I imagine that it could be adapted to work with the synchronisation
feature (it exploits Peter's idea of card 'filtering'). It can already
render fonts within 'desktop Mnemosyne'.
Unfortunately I do not have time to work on this anymore. The source
code is available in the plugin package. I could also push it to
launchpad if it interests anybody.
