Hi,

Merging db files is not yet supported. Feel free to open a request on
uservoice.

Sorry,

Hi.

A 'cards' does not save scheduling information, and is only used for
sharing cards with other people. So, please don't use the cards format
for backup, but use the db file instead.

Cheers,

Hi,

thanks for your answer.

My problem is, that I have been using a few seperate decks of cards since the very begining. I merged some of them, when this was still possible in the old version of Mnemosyne, but not all of them. I would now like to merge all my decks and use categories instead.

This problem becomes even more obvious, when I want to use cards with Mnemododo on my mobile. It seems I can only use 1 deck at a time. Mnemododo only recognises one directory and ignores the other with a different card deck. Or am I doing something wrong?

What to do?
When can we excpect the possibility of merging two decks of cards without losing learning data? In the first version of Mnemosye was this working perfectly.

Thank you in advance for your answer,
best regards,
JAKA

Hi,

This is a hobby project for me, and I don't have infinite time to work
on Mnemosyne :-)

Currently, my priority is integrating the new webserver and the new
Android client, which should solve your problem in a different way :-)

Again, feel free to open a feature request on our uservoice forums so
that other people can vote for it and so that I can get a feel for how
much this is needed.

Sorry,

Peter

Mnemogogo includes explicit support for multiple databases. It will
remember a different sync directory for each and includes some simple
safety checks to (try to) prevent imports into the wrong database.
Please ensure that you are using the latest version.

Mnemododo does not include explicit support for multiple databases but
it should nevertheless work well. The trick is to export each database
into a different directory. They should all be visible from within the
Mnemododo settings screen.

(The restrict directory search option can be used to minimise the
search time if it is too long.)

Regardless of how many databases you have, the usual trouble-shooting
steps apply. Please ensure, from your phone, that each exported
directory contains at least the files STATS.CSV, CARDS, and CONFIG
(all in upper-case letters).

Hi Peter,
thank you for your answer. I understand that you first work on the higher priorities.
Somebody told me the decks could be easily merged manualy within a certain sql software, that it would only take 5-10 minutes of work. I don't have sufficient knowledge to do that but I am willing to pay somebody who is able to merge my 4 decks (around 6000 cards altogether). Could you maybe do this for me?
Best regards,
JAKA

Hi,

(Please put your reply at the top of the quoted message as opposed to
at the bottom, otherwise people have to scroll a lot to see your reply).

It's not just a matter of a few sql commands, as you also need to take
care of making sure the sync protocol data is updated correctly, etc,
... . So, whether I do a quick and dirty hack for your database alone,
or I write it in a generic way is not so much difference.

But I thought your main problem was solved since Mnemododo allows you
to use multiple databases?

Hi Tim,

Thanks for your answer. Please forgive me my ignorance, but I still have difficulties using this:
When I export one deck to mobile, the main Mnemosyne window remains blocked, so I can't copy the second deck, until I copy the first deck back to the Mnemosyne. In this case the file STATS dissapears from the Mnemogogo folder of the first deck ...

However, I would like to have all my decks merged into one and I'm going to pay somebody to do it for me. Could you please tell me, how much do you think this work is worth, being done properly? I have 4 decks, around 6000 cards?

Normally, you should just be able to choose "Open..." from the File
menu and select another .db file.

Each .db file has its own export path (which has to be configured in
the usual way) and its own locked status.

What did you try so far?

I haven't tried this procedure before, but it should not be too
difficult. I would suggest making a backup copy of your Mnemosyne home
directory. Maybe two even! And then to try experimenting with the
import and export options.

Hi,

If you can afford to lose your revision data, it's trivial, just
export to *.cards and reimport.

If you want a proper merge, I'm afraid the only person that can do so
reliably is me, so I would strongly advise against paying somebody to
do so, with the risk of getting a corrupt database, for which I will
give no support afterwards.

It is possible that during the beta period of 2.3 I schedule some time
to work on a proper merger, but no promises.

Cheers,

Peter

Hi Peter,

My feature request on the forum does not get much attention.
I am aware that this is a free hobby project for you, that's why I would like to ask you if I could pay you to do the merging of my decks for me?

You said that you are the only one to do this correctly.
What do you think?

Hi,

Not sure if I mentioned this earlier, but if I start taking on paid requests, this stops being a hobby project :-)

Note that Mnemosyne did warn you when you wanted to save to a different database that this is not the recommended way...

Yes,
but in the initial version the merging was still possible.
You said it would only take you a couple of minutes!

So if you don't want to help me, can you recommend somebody reliable that I could contact?

Hi,

I don't think I even said it would take a couple of minutes. Implementing a new feature, testing it, making sure it works in all corner cases is a much longer undertaking.

I have this policy that if bug reports come in, I try to fix them as soon as possible. For new features however, it's a combination of what seems to be popular as well as my own interest, and I'm afraid to say that merging decks does not seem to be a highly requested feature.

For the moment, writing the new Android client is my priority, I'm afraid...

Hi,

Note that I never said that even merging them manually would be "a couple of minutes".

The only statement with respect to time in this thread is actually one by you, where you said:

>Somebody told me the decks could be easily merged manualy within a certain sql software, that it would >only take 5-10 minutes of work.

However, it's not just blindly merging sql tables as that certain somebody told you. It's thinking through the consequences, e.g. with respect to the logs and the syncing, which takes time.

Cheers,

Hard to say how this would take, perhaps 5 to 10 hours?

It would need to be done by someone who is intimately familiar with the internals of Mnemosyne and the syncing protocol, which I'm afraid is basically me...

Took a bit longer than expected, but if people want to try out this feature, see

Hi Peter,
i just wanted to say that I love your program, and thanks for the work! I recommend it to everyone I can think of.

At the moment my teeny problem is that I started DB's on several computers and would like to merge them. Is this the new feature you mention?

Hi,

Glad you like the program!

Merging decks is indeed the option for that. I will be in the next release.

Cheers,

Peter

I started using Mnemosyne just a couple of weeks ago.
Our 7 year old has to do reading and multiplication table and divisions excercices.
I made a set1 of cards and then another one set2.
Only a couple of days later I found out about the "tags" feature to separate sets of cards.
I've read up here a bit on how to merge them.
I've exported the set1 as a set1.cards and whilst running the set2,
clicked import and went to the set1.cards stack and imported them.
It worked, but it has overwritten my second set2.

Where did it go? I can see the .wav files from set2 though.

Hi,

Merging db files (through file - import) is supported since 2.3.2.

If you want to have your data in a non-standard location, start Mnemosyne with the -d <my data dir> switch.

Also have a look here:

Cheers,

Peter

Hi,

Some observations:

* if you re-import the same cards files, or a cards file which contains an updated version of these cards, the corresponding cards already in your database are updated.
* did you import all the cards in the same db file? Perhaps you other cards are in another database?
* did you check in the card browser or in activate cards if perhaps you deactivated some tags corresponding to the other set of cards?

If these tips don't help, feel free to mail me these two *.cards files privately.

Cheers,

Peter
