Hello,
I already posted this thread, but somehow it disappeard.

I would like to ask you why you stopped the development of Mitro. I suppose you were developing this project in your free time, trying to do the best job without time. Suddenly, you have been acquired by Twitter (http://techcrunch.com/2014/07/31/twitter-mitro/) and everything stopped. You barely answer to the github project issues, and you don't even care about the app because you care about avoiding to spend 90$ for the iOS developer account (https://github.com/mitro-co/mitro/issues/80).

Why is this project different for you know?
Did you lose faith in it?
Is Twitter developing something similar (http://www.theverge.com/2014/10/22/7034113/inside-twitters-ambitious-plan-to-kill-the-password-on-mobile-devices)?

Are we losing time trying to continue this project?

Thanks

The short version is that to be a viable project, Mitro really needs at least one person who is very passionate about the possibilities of an open source password manager, and is willing to dedicate a significant amount of time to improving it. We haven't been able to find someone like that to really take it over yet.

The longer version: we spent two years trying to make Mitro into a profitable self-sustaining business, and we couldn't get it there. We had hoped that we could figure out a way to make it a self-sustaining open source project, but I think we vastly underestimated the amount of effort it would take to do it justice. At this point, we have somewhere between 5000-6000 active users, which is pretty insignificant (LastPass and 1Password have millions). I'm proud of what we built, but unfortunately easy password sharing and organizational tools to manage passwords were not enough of a distinguishing feature for us to find enough users to justify continuing the company.

Open sourcing the project is a last ditch effort to try and keep something of what we built alive. Sadly, it turns out that maintaining the public service is also a fair amount of work, so we need to find someone to take it over, or it is likely that Mitro will be shut down in 2015.

Evan

Thanks for the detailed explanation. I have an idea to make Mitro self-sustainable, and I'll try to develop it, with your support (in Github). If I manage to do it, I'd like to take over the project :))

Can you upload the website source code as well? So we can improve it as well?

Hey Marco, I like this app, and I think it is a necessity to have a open sourced alternative password manager. I mess around with python and stuff a little bit. Im not a developer but I am technically inclined and half-assed motivated, lol. I am willing to put forth some time and effort toward the project in any way you might find useful. I don't want it to die.

Cool. You can join me taking care of it! :))

There are other 2 friends of mine that are helping me. We could have a chat all together.

Hello Marco.

I would like to help this project.

I have enabled two-factor authentication of Mitro. However, I can use username and password to login Mitro directly without any popup information on 6-digits two-factor authentication code.

Would you please shed me some light on how to make 6-digits two-factor authentication code show up if you have some ideas?

Thank you very much.

Best regards,

Winston Hong

It was my understanding that 2fa is only used when you're signing in from an unrecognized location.
