Tamil Thali types

Hi all,

Where can I learn more about Tamil Thali types. I recently came to know that there is a custom of both (bride's and groom's) sides providing one of the pendants of the Thali. What is the signifcance of the different shapes, the bottu for example?

Thanks. I searched, but I didn't find  what I was looking for. There's some vague info, but I am trying to find the meaning of the pendants and the historic origin of them. For e.g. pottu thali, I couldn't find what it represents.  I read that pottu thali is used by Naidus, also that some people share the thali (i.e. that the bride's side provides one of the pendants and the groom's side provides the other).  There's nothing much in wikipedia and any of the other sites I landed on. It would also be interesting to learn when exactly these customs started.

Hi all,

Anybody knows about (I read wikipedia already) wore Tiger tooth/Claw haali as mangala sutra (பெண் கழுத்தில் திருமண நாளில் கட்டப்படும் இரண்டு புலி நகம்/புலிப்பல் கொண்ட தாலி). One family custom in Jaffna - they are big landlords.
