Jeanne H. Hein (Humphreys) recently realized a great aim of her life. For 20 years, she worked on Arte da Lingua Malabar by Father Henrique Henriques, a manuscript in Tamil and Portuguese written in 1548 by a Jesuit missionary. Jeanne finished the writing actually in 1982 and has waited a quarter of a century to see it published. It will be coming out now in the Harvard Oriental Series.

The Center For Independent Study
CIS NEWS, SEPTEMBER 2010 VOLUME XXVIII, NUMBER 1
ANNUAL FALL MEETING
4 PM SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 26, 2010
Room 106, Stoeckel Hall - 469 College Street (at Wall Street - across from Sprague Hall).
Speaker: Kathryn Alexander, ‘NOTES ON NOTES’
Please join us for wine and cheese with Center members and friends (guests are
welcome) to hear Kathryn Alexander, composer and Associate Professor in the
Department of Music at Yale, speak about contemporary music composition and the
creative process in music. Her compositions draw upon a range of
disciplines, including literature, the visual and plastic arts, the sciences, and technology to
develop formal schema that distill from the abstract rather than from literal,
programmatic meaning. The result is a varied repertoire
described variously by critics as music in which “... the gestures were bolder,
the moods more volatile, the climaxes more clearly marked and - most significant
– the sounds enormously more colorful,” and where “... the instrumentalists
out-Bartoked Bartok in their extramusical pursuits.” She will play excerpts
from her works. This event is
sponsored by the Center for Independent Study and is free and open to the
public.
HOW TO SPEND A SUNDAY AFTERNOON: CIS SALONS
For the last two years, CIS members and their friends have met on occasional Sundays to share ideas and experiences on one or another topic. We call these meetings “Salons” as we engage in informal conversation over wine and cheese. A few examples from recent gatherings:
In some cases there are “assignments”--suggested readings or viewings to provide a basis for the conversation. In others, the backgrounds and experiences of participants inform the discussion. We welcome your suggestions. Seen a movie that’s kept you wondering about its meaning? Read a provocative book or article? Pondered the implications of a technological innovation? All may be fodder for discussion. Contact any board member with your ideas.
CIS SPRING LUNCHEON, MAY 16, 2010: ‘The Old and the New’
On May 16 the Center held its annual spring luncheon. The food was delicious, the business meeting brief, the best of all possible combinations. But the high point of the afternoon was provided by two of our members who recalled how they came to their present occupations.
Barbara Bell spoke about her transition from teaching on the college level to sitting on the Connecticut Siting Council. Her road to this position began in her interest in literature on nature, an interest that, in turn, spurred her involvement with environmental issues. She became a local activist and found herself frequently advocating the cause before the state legislature. This advocacy resulted in the invitation to join the Council, which decides the placement of power plants and associated facilities, such as cell towers.
Rosalie Feldman described her work running workshops for newspaper staffs, helping reporters sharpen their skills. A long career in journalism enabled her to shift to this specialty, which takes her all over the country as newspaper editors request her presence for several days to share her expertise.
Questions from the audience were distinct: we were all intrigued by the specific ways the Siting Council operates and how it arrives at its decisions, while questions to Rosalie were more general, focusing on the future, if any, of newspapers. In all, the afternoon represented the merging of new technologies with the old.
2010-2011 READING GROUP
This year, the once-a-month Tuesday afternoon group will concentrate on reading literature of immigration, specifically, fiction dealing with the experience of coming to America. This timely topic encompasses a wide array of authors, nationalities, time periods, and varieties of immigrant experiences. The list of proposed books has been described as “heavy on the side of fairly recent immigration, short on several areas (English colonists settling in Native-American territory; Irish immigration of the 1850's; Italian; German and other European, post-1848 and pre-WW II; Vietnamese boat people and other refugees). The group welcomes suggestions.
If you would like to join this lively discussion, please contact Ruth Schmitt (203-865-1491 or ruth...@snet.net). The first meeting will be on Tuesday, September 21 from 1:30-3:30.
NEWS OF MEMBERS
Jeanne Hein’s book, Arte da Lingua Malabar, co-authored with Tamil scholar V.S. Rajam, has been accepted for publication by the Harvard University Press. Jeanne was a founding member of CIS and an active participant for many years, and the book is the culmination of work she began more than thirty years ago and shared with Center members in work-in-progress talks, a biographers’ group, and informal conversations. Her reconstruction of the life of a 16th century Jesuit missionary to India, Henrique Henriques, led her to his 1548 Portuguese-Tamil grammar. Jeanne was able to obtain a microfilm of the world’s only known copy of the manuscript from the National Library of Portugal. She worked with scholars of 16th century versions of both languages to prepare this translation, which will make Henriques’ work accessible to present-day linguists.
Gwen Heuss-Severance will exhibit her Landscape Photographs on Saturday, October 2 & Sunday, October 3, 2010, from 11 am to 4 pm at St. Paul & St. James Episcopal Church (57 Olive Street, New Haven) as part of New Haven’s 13th Annual City-Wide Open Studios.
In early July, Sara Ohly journeyed back to Bodrum, Turkey, the birthplace of Herodotus, now a resort with a Crusader Castle Museum, where she taught English As a Second Language (ESL) in the Peace Corps in 1964-65. She then attended a Yale and Bosphorus University conference in Istanbul on Women, Secularism and the State.
Lauren Pinzka will present a paper, “Beyond Freud? Psychoanalytic Theory A Century Later”, on October 13, 2010, at the 19th Century French Studies Conference at Yale University. She will evaluate how the field of psychoanalysis has evolved in the field of nineteenth-century French literature since its peak thirty years ago, providing a mise à jour (update) of the place of Freud and his theories.
NEW MEMBER
Ian Ganassi is the newest member of the Center for Independent Study. A widely published poet—his work can be found in such publications as Ploughshares and The Paris Review—he teaches creative writing at New Haven’s Educational Center for the Arts and has conducted a Yale College seminar on contemporary poetry. He is also a Latin percussionist and dance accompanist. At present he is engaged in a verse translation of the Aeneid, sections of which have appeared in the New England Review. He is looking forward to meeting kindred souls in the Center.
OPEN BOARD MEETINGS
CIS Board meetings, in accordance with our Bylaws, are open to all Center members and your participation is always welcome. Meetings are held monthly, on Monday eventings. If you are interested in attending, contact Gwen Heuss-Severance for details and an agenda. The next meeting is at 8 pm on Monday, October 4, 2010.
CONNOTE
The Hartford Courant, once nationally known, is a shadow of its former self. It’s just our state’s most notable example of a widespread wasting disease. What’s replacing print news in Connecticut? Several Courant reporters and editors formed the online Connecticut Mirror (www.ctmirror.org), which has sober investigative aims, while a more gossipy experiment is Connecticut News Junkie (www.ctnewsjunkie.com). At the opinionated extreme, see My Left Nutmeg (www.myleftnutmeg.com). All of them stick pretty much to politics. Well, it’s the season. Print news is dead: Web news rocks. b
ELECTRONIC NEWSLETTER
This year the Center will phase in electronic delivery of the Newsletter, beginning with the April issue. To receive an electronic copy, please be certain that Carol Ross has your e-mail address on file. She can be reached at carol...@sbcglobal.net, by phone at 203-624-9423, or at 160 East Rock Road, New Haven, CT 06511. Those of you who do not have access to electronic delivery, please advise Carol if you wish to receive the CIS newsletter in printed form. We look forward to hearing from you!
