Hello Guys,
I would like to implant AAV coated GRIN lens on the top of the hippocampal CA1 region. However, I had an issue with holding the GRIN lens. I purchased bulldog serrefine to attach with the stereotaxic apparatus. But the space under the bulldog serrefine is very small and sometimes lens is tilted. In addition, there is a chance of losing coated virus.
Is there anyone could share idea how to hold the GRIN lens?

Many thanks.

I am using Rodico[1] which I put in and on a small hollow glass rod.
The Rodico holds the lens in place safely, but also is weak enough to
release it after cementing it in, and by pressing into close-ish to
the glass, the lens remains straight. That said, the slightest touch
on a different surface will tilt it again, but so far that hasn't been
an issue.

Cheers,
Matthias

Hi,

I have been using a 3D printed part (.stl file attached) that I have made (inspired by other designs) and it has worked pretty well for me.
Also, Mightex sells some models (here) but they are not really cheap.

Cheers,
Omid

Hi Omid,

I really appreciate your sharing. It's brilliant. I tried to print it with our 3d printer (QIDI X-ONE2), while it can't print it well especially the clamp part. Do you have any suggestions for the printing?

Best,
Wenjian

Hi Wenjian

I guess you printed it with a filament printer. As this part has some very small dimensions i think many filament printers might not do the job right. We have a resin based printer (Form2 from Formula) and that prints it find. If you don't have such printer you could consider outsourcing the printing.

Kind regards,
Omid

Thanks for sharing Omid. For what diameter of lenses does this work? Does it only work for a particular diameter, or can it be used for a range of lens diameters?

Hi Nate,

I got an earlier version of this from Omid, and it has worked great.  It looks it fits the same diameter of GRIN lenses as the previous version: 1.0mm, 1.2mm, and 1.5mm.  Omid, please correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm implanting 0.6mm lenses, so I've attached a modified version that accommodates a 0.6mm lens in smallest hole (the others are 1.2 and 1.5) in case that is useful to you. However, ...

Note that Omid has made some KEY adjustments to the V3 holder he attached above - specifically, he has narrowed down the piece at the end where it holds the lens, which allows easier access for cementing in the lens after implant.  The file I have attached does NOT have this super important adjustment - I had to adjust my holder on the fly by narrowing it down with a dental drill (not recommended!). So, if you use this file for a 0.6mm lens MAKE SURE to adjust the file before printing and narrow down the end! Otherwise you will have a tough time when cementing the lens.  Will post an updated file here when I get around to adjusting it.

Nat

Hi Nate, Nat,

Thank you Nat for the clarification.
To add up to your comments, for small diameter lenses I have used the flat portions of the holder tips (between the holes).
In theory, the two holder tips should be able to meet each other if you tighten the screw. This, however, also depends on the printing material. In one of my early prints an arm of the holder broke when I tried to push the two tips against each other.
So I suggest testing your print before using it for small diameter lenses before actual usage.

Best,
Omid
