Hello,

We currently run MinecraftEDU on Windows computers in our lab, but we will be switching to Macs soon.  We tried installing MinecraftEDU on the test Mac that we had.  The installation went fine, but when we tried to launch the program, we got a message saying we need to install Java.  After that we tried launching the user portion (Start MinecraftEDU) we got a message saying "MinecraftEDU Launcher quit unexpectedly."  (picture of error is attached to this email)  Multiple attempts of launching resulted in the same error.

We tried reintalling the program, completely shut the computer down, and then tried running it again, but still got the same error.

The Server Laucher portion appears to be working, however.

Do any Mac users have any insight about what we should do next?  I have never encountered this error before on our Windows machines.

Our Mac is running OS X Sierra.

Thanks,

Amy Morgan

Hi, I just forward your message to my district tech that was able to help me. He's off work but I hope he can help.

Hi Amy, make sure you have only one version of Java installed and be sure it's Java 6 release 45 or later. Assuming your Macs are new(ish), they will have a 64-bit architecture. If this is the case, be sure you install the 64-bit version of Java as well. I've experienced Java is almost always the cause of launch errors. It would also be very helpful to include the details of the error in screenshot. It can be used to identify the hardware and see where the offense occurred. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the suggestions.  We are on mid-winter break right now, but I will check out the Java version we are using as soon as we get back.

Had a chance to check out our problem again.  We made sure we had the lastest version of Java (Java 8 update 121) and still had a problem launching the program.  Attached is the Java report.  Does anybody have any other suggestions.

I am starting to think that this might be an OS issue, not a Java issue.  We removed Java 8 and installed Java 7 instead.  Still does not work.  I read in another post that there was a problem running EDU on Sierra, but that it worked on El Capitan.  If our school goes with Macs, they will most likely be preloaded with Sierra, which means that we wont be able to use EDU.  :(

This is not good news for me. I have it on Mac's with Capitan now and it works great but I will be setting up brand new macs during the summer and have them ready for next year. Big time bummer.

We are going to try one more thing.  On another thread, the response below was posted, so we are going to try the legacy Java (6) instead of Java 7.  Will report back on the results.

Re: {Minecraft Teachers} Re: Java error "newer version already installed" trying to install Java 6 on OSX Sierra
We haven't moved any machines to Sierra yet so don't have exactly the same situation.

Can you find where the newer version of Java lives on the hard disk and just delete the whole folder structure?  I recall from when I was getting all of our El Capitan MacBooks setup that was a helpful step in sorting out the java installation issues.  Look in places like /library/java or /system/library/java

I used this version, which I guess is what you are trying to install: https://support.apple.com/kb/dl1572?locale=en_US

Our technology coordinator just tried the legacy Java on a Sierra machine and EDU did not work.  Looks like it is the OS that is preventing it from working.  Just a matter of time until EDU become obsolete, I guess.   Very disappointing because the new MC:EE doesn't even have command blocks which is something I use quite extensively in an Oregon Trail map I created.

This is bad news for all of us Mac users. I will have one of our tech also try to install on one of the new iMac's. I will make sure to let you know how it goes for our site.

Thanks for the info

Thanks.   I hope you find a solution.  Maybe we didn't do the install correctly.

Hey Amy - We have the old version of Minecraft Edu running on our Macs. We used to have that error, but we seem to have found the combination of elements that works without error:

Our iMacs run OSX El Capitan Version 10.11.6
Java Version 1.6.0_65
Minecraft Edu version 17.1.10 (I think)

Thanks for the info.  We might need to try the Java and EDU versions you mentioned.    The machines our school is buying will have Sierra on them and they are obviously not downing to downgrade the OS to El Capitan just to run Minecraft.  :(

We did find a solution, however.  Our Technology Coordinator installed Boot Camp onto the test machine, so we are able to have access to a Windows operating system.  We loaded EDU onto the Windows side and everything worked great.  Not the greatest solution, but at least we will be able to still use the program.
