Student Looking for A Java/Mod Tutor

One of my 7th grade students wants to create his own mod and wanted to know if anyone knew of someone that could help him.  He already has his plans on what the mod will involve, he just needs the programming help.  He has been teaching himself via YouTube, but I am sure he could use more directed help.  He will be attending an ID Tech class at our local university this summer, but would like to connect with someone that could help him directly and his family is willing to pay for the sessions.  If anyone knows of a java/mod programmer that would be interested, please let me know and I will forward the information to him.

Hi Aleksi,

No I have not.  He is a self-motiviated 7th grader that has been trying to teach himself.  He actually was the one who introduced me to Minecraft three years ago and was a veteran minecrafter even back then.  He said he has tried watching YouTube videos, but I am sure that is not enough.  He has all his ideas down as far as what his mod will be, but just needs help in getting it into mod form.  Any information you have would be greatly appreciated.  He does have a Skype account and his family can afford the cost for any tutoring.

Ok, I could look into it. If he could send me a mail at aleksi(at)teachergaming.com with the ideas of what he's mod would be like I could check up on how complicated it would be and if I have time to do some tutoring for that.

Bringing this thread back.

I'd like to learn more about building Mods, I'd like to find an alternative to the Youth Digital Course which is about $200. 

Linda, Did you student purchase the program. If so what did he think?

I figure I could just use tutorials on YouTube, but am curious what have used to learn about building mods.

Chris,

No, he never signed up for course. However, this coming semester, I am using the website www.learntomod.com with my students. As a teacher, I can get a free account for my class. Individually, a student can sign up for the course for $30. This will give them access to the lessons and a MC server for a year. With the free account, we will have limited acces to a server, but they do have an MC simulator to test out their mods. They can also earn college prep credit from the University of San Diego by paying an additional $90 fee. It uses blocky scripting to teach Java. I have been doing the lessons in prep for class and it is all self-directed so students can move at their own pace. I will give more feedback as the class progresses.

BTW, I learned about this program from Colin Gallagher's book, Minecraft in the Classroom: Ideas, inspiration, and student projects for teachers.

I'm also going to try the learn to mod program, but please keep us posted about the progress with your students.

I have this book, it's a nice start.  I'm beta testing with my 10 year old son.  I do have Java experience, so I'm seeing it with a different lens than most.  

Regarding bringing this to the classroom, I'm guessing I can write original Java mods using MinecraftEDU, so that's my next attempt.  Anyone doing that yet?
