I apologize if there's a similar thread I searched and I could not find one. I'm looking into a ring doorbell and security system. I thought the brains of the makerspace might have a better brand or idea in mind. What are everybody's thoughts?

Thank you in advance

It's likely the same with other big tech companies, but before buying a ring product I would advise looking into who else has access to ring camera feeds and what they've done with that access :)

Unfortunately, home automation has been off my radar for a bit so I'm kinda short on specific hardware recommendations for video doorbells, but if you were looking for help with that I could take some time later to look into it.

Besides the fact that Ring has a surveillance network that they share data with law enforcement and you have no expectation of privacy...

They’re a double edged sword when it comes to insurance too. If anyone knows you’ve got it, you can be on the hook for retaining pertinent evidence not only if a crime is committed on your own property, but also that of your neighbors.
From a crime-stoppers perspective, cameras declare publicly that you have things worth stealing, and from a defense lawyers perspective they’re fairly trivial to refute or undermine in court. So will they actually yeild a conviction?
If you happen to be of the weapon owning persuasion and an incident occurs on your property, it might help your defense, but it could equally well undermine it if you’re not SUPER mindful of your actions and sobriety level at all times.
From my own experience, when a car plowed into the back of my parked car and ran, all the video footage on the block (multiple retail stores with higher end cameras) did absolutely nothing because the cops won’t put property damage ahead of the huge backlog of more important crimes on their plate.

There’s my 2 unsolicited cents
