14 Years

My Darling Michael,

Fourteen years ago today you left this Earth forever to be with God in your eternal home. It feels like it was yesterday, everyday. I am reminded of the years as I see Parker grow to be a tall 14 year old and Macie grow to be a young lady, both born around this time fourteen years ago. You would be forty years old now, the same age of my father, your grandfather, Virgil Troas Hofmeister, when he left for Heaven. But my father left children, a line of succession -- me being one of them. It kills me to see pictures of your friends, the men especially, married and with children. They have moved on. It is said, "When you lose your parent, you lose your past. When you lose your spouse, you lose your present. And when you lose your child you lose your future." I have found that we haven't lost our future, after all.

 Your dad and I have your precious sister Katie, who has given the world three wonderful children. They carry both yours and Katie's genes as well as those of her devoted husband, Peter and his family. Was this your plan, Father God? You give and you take away. You did not strip us of the love of children. I thank you for that. I value life and for however much I have left, Katie, Peter, Sophia, Finn and Charlotte will always be the most important.

I love you, Michael and I have your pictures everywhere. I am never without you. I open a drawer and there you are, I read my Bible and read over and over the sweet notes you wrote to Mommy telling me how much you love me, and over my shoulder in the office is the big smiling picture that I talk to and stare into your eyes. You are everywhere and forever alive in y heart.
