Wider availability and promotion of bikes like these in our town would be game-changing for bikes as transportation.

Thanks for sharing this Laura.  I have always been frustrated with the fact that everything in the US needs to be for racing.  Bikes, skis canoes, shoes....

Thanks, Laura, for sending this great video below along.  I imagine this bikes would be great in many medium size towns in VT, in particular I could see wide acceptance in Bristol since it is pretty flat.

There are sources for Dutch-style bikes here in the United States. One of the best is Public Bikes in California, which offers several models, ranging from single speed ones through seven-speed derailleur models all the way to snazzy seven-speed internal gear ones. All have step-through frames and upright handlebars and come with fenders and partial chain guards. A rugged rear rack is an available accessory.

Here's the top end example:

When I studied in Oxford these types of bikes were also ubiquitous, since the town center was closed to most traffic [except delivery vehicles & buses] with satellite parking areas on the city perimeter. Being Oxford there were a lot of folks in their subfuscs riding around.
Notice there are no helmet wearers either.

Thanks for this reminder that there are alternatives like these which may get more folks to ride.
