I started using Memento about 10 years ago and I always found it intuitive and easy to use. I've used it on and off ever since, from my Android phone. Now I want to get back to using it on a Windows workstation, because I have a lot of new data to enter, and find myself baffled at every point.

I tried to log in with my Google account. I supply a user id and password, and the arrow just spins and eventually times out.

So I created an account. The Wiki tells me that if the data is already in a Google Sheet, I need to create a matching library, and then sync the library to the Google Sheet that already exists. So I created the library. From there the instructions say:
  1. Link the library to a new Sheets file on Google Drive by opening the Library Entries List screen and then its Action menu. If the library is already set up to synchronize with a Sheets file, the option will be entitled "Sync with Google Sheets". If not, it will be entitled "Link To Google Sheets". Since we are initiating sync, select Link to Google Sheets.
So I've opened the Libary Entries List screen, and even added a dummy entry. But I don't see an Action menu. The menu bar says File Edit View Data Account Help. None of those has an Action menu item. Nor does any context menu I can call up.

What am I missing?

For account issues, I recommend contacting sup...@mementodatabase.com.

As for the link & sync, open the Action menu by tapping the 3-dot icon in the upper right corner of the screen (on Android, anyway). There should be something equivalent in the Windows platform. Toward the bottom of the choices in that menu is Import & Export. The first choice in that menu is Link (or sync) to Google Sheets.

Hello
There was a big change with Google. Since then there have been problems synchronizing with the "old" files. The solution was to create a new file and synchronize with it.

The root of the original problem is that the help and and the wiki do not clearly distinguish between the Windows app and the Android app. The two apps are probably as similar they can be, which isn’t very. The description in the wiki is about the Android app, as is just about all of the Help. In Windows there is no   and so when directed to the Action menu” I look for a item on a menu bar labelled Action, and search through every menu, and right-click every panel, in an effort to find it, or one of the menu items that are supposed to sit below it. In this case, though I might agree that there should be something equivalent in the Windows platform, there isn’t. I spent 2 hours looking for it before coming to this group in bafflement. I had begun to think that the wiki was maybe badly out of date, until it dawned on me that it was offering irrelevance, not advice

I discover that the relationship between a library and a Google Sheet is mediated entirely by the Android app. The Windows app appears to know nothing about it. It certainly doesn’t acknowledge it exists, much less offer a way to manage it. So trying to create a table by importing a Google Sheet may work in Android, but in Windows it is impossible.

The supported way to get a library that is linked to a Google Sheet into the Windows app is:
  • In the Android app:
    • Upload the library to the cloud.
  • In the Windows app:
    • In the left sidebar, right-click My libraries | Refresh. The library you just uploaded will appear in the list.
    • In the left sidebar, right-click My libraries | library name | Download. You can then display and modify the library.
    • Keep a close watch on the number of entries reported by the Windows app and by Google Sheets. When changes in the Windows version of the library do not propagate to the Google Sheet:
  • In the Android app:
    • Check that the library is synced to the cloud. Then sync to Google Sheets. If necessary tell the app to resolve conflicts in favour of the Memento version.
I had never put a library in the cloud before this. It’s a long time ago, but as I recall, at the time my reason for using Google Sheets rather than the cloud was cost. There is still a reason to do this. The print function in Windows is cumbersome and ugly. Use Google Sheets for that instead.

Hallo

Hello
The Memento versions (Windows, Android, iOS, Java) are different programs that use the same data. Android is the "original" one. The developer created it first. Then came the PC versions and the last one is iOS. The wiki was written by Bill when there was only the Android version. Beth added some PC stuff. But basically the wiki was created by USERS.

Yes, I wrote most of the wiki based on my Android app, which at the time I started, was the only platform supported by Memento. As time passed, the Desktop Edition was released, but I didn't use it, so I continued my work based on the Android platform. The same when the iOS platform became supported.

I have retired and no longer work on the wiki. While Beth has done some good work, especially regarding the Desktop Edition, THE WIKI IS LARGELY UNATTENDED AND STATIC, with new features supported only when the developer releases something substantial and documents it himself, like the UI JavaScript library.

While Mmm, Ernst Moser, David Gilmore, and others are very responsive in the forum, which delights me, the wiki is meanwhile becoming stale and less and less useful over time, and the Desktop Edition and the iOS platform are largely unaddressed.

Surely, among all of you, there is someone who speaks English and who has sufficient time available and knowledge to offer to become the new primary author of the wiki, bring it up to date with new Memento features, add iOS & Desktop support, and figure out new ways to help Memento users who need help, as Beth did with her YouTube videos.

Would any of you please step up and save the wiki and provide help for Memento users beyond that provided by Help and the wiki? Just contact the developer (Vasiliy Egorov) at sup...@mementodatabade.com and let him know your interest & intent, and become an author/admin of the wiki. If you need help with this, contact me by email. Ernst & Beth can also provide some assistance, so I recommend copying all 3 of us in that email.

You don't have to know everything. Just learn what you need as you go along, as I did. Many thanks in advance!
