Hello

I'm pretty sure this is a common raven - It sounds like a raven, not a fish crow, and not american crow.  I've never seen them in this part of maryland but I've heard them here multiple times and finally got to see one.   (Merlin and sleuth keep telling me it's a crow)  It's beak is definitely longer than it's head.  I believe it was raven sized but I have no scale objects.  They seem to have a nest under a tall bridge above the Linganore creek.

Location:  East central frederick county
Time:  1pm today.

Thanks for any thoughts.

Ted.

Look at the bill. It’s a Raven. The plumage suggests a youngster.

Ted,

This is a raven. You can even see the feathering at the base of the bill. You say that there’s a nest at a bridge over Linganore Creek – I would urge you to get this into the Breeding Bird Atlas portal on eBird.

FYI Ravens have been extending their range into areas of MD where they used to be scarce or rare.

I'm going to offer a different opinion. When I first looked at the pics, "Raven" is not what came to my mind. It just doesn't seem to have the heaviness of the bill or slightly scruffy look that I usually associate with a Raven. Now if you heard this bird that you photographed vocalizing that would definitely be a deciding factor, but after looking at some comparison sites, I'm not sure. I'm obviously going against the prevailing opinion here, but check out these comparisons:

I see from the bill why you think it is a Raven.  However, I agree that it is not as hairy/scruffy as Ravens usually appear.  So, I'm on the fence without size or sound to back it up.

If it helps, however, we have seen and simultaneously heard Ravens here in Western Carroll County.

If this was indeed a young bird, don't expect it to sound like its parents. A few years ago I kept hearing loud avian shrieks nearby and wondered if a neighbor was raising peacocks. Then one day a couple of ravens circled over our yard, and one of them was making the exact noise I'd been hearing for weeks! Young crows also sound different from adults.

Agreed with Marcia and Kurt about a fledgling raven - look at that fleshy gape! There are currently no Common Raven nesting records in the Atlas for the Linganore Creek area, so it would be great if you could submit the observation to https://ebird.org/atlasmddc/submit (it has to be the Atlas eBird portal, not just regular eBird). If you want to find out more information about how to atlas, check out  https://ebird.org/atlasmddc/about/how-to-atlas

Thanks!

I believe I have it in the atlas correctly with a couple photos.  I know the ravens have been there for a while.  I remember hearing them last summer and according to the property owners, they have been in the area for several years.
