Around 2:30 this afternoon, Jane Kostenko and I were putzing around the house and heard a Common Raven's guttural "cronk cronk cronk" overhead outside the house (windows open to enjoy the fresh air!). We went out into the back yard and could hear it still calling as it flew off to the north. We never saw it though almost every imaginable large black bird flew over instead (Black and Turkey Vultures and American Crows). I got a crappy recording on my phone. With a little imagination and some volume on your speakers, you can hear first AMCR around 6 seconds followed by CORA between 7 and 8 seconds on the recording. There aren't many records of CORA in St. Mary's but two of them have flown over our house!

Someone in our Patuxent Bird Club/PGAS meeting last night said they had a Common Raven at Point Lookout recently. I don’t remember who said it.

Yesterday, I had one come soaring north along a transmission line near the Harry Nice Bridge in southern Charles County. I snapped some photos as it soared over. Then while driving back to Carroll County, I had another raven being mobbed by American crows at the intersection of US 301 (Crain Highway) and McKendree Road in southern PG County. Also in PG County, I had another raven fly over as I was traveling up the BW Parkway. Is it possible that some are migrating through?

Common Ravens are <almost> common now in Prince George’s County. Several nests have been documented for the Atlas. It’s still a surprise to see one but no longer considered outlandish. We’ve had them as flyovers at our house several times.

Below is the current Common Raven breeding range predicted by eBird’s latest status and trends map. The dots are BBA2 breeding locations. Quite interesting!

The nesting Ravens are back at the tower near the Dorsey Search Village Center in Columbia, Howard County. A new nest and two adults were present this afternoon.

That map is super generous in Calvert and St. Mary's! Maybe by the end of the atlas? There are a handful of CORA sightings in either county so far. Having driven the length of Calvert County twice a day for 16 years and never having seen one, I'm hoping that they do continue to expand. Recent sightings seem to be between Cypress Swamp and Flag Ponds or right along the very northern edge along Rt. 260.

Tyler... your use of the word putz brought back fond memories, but not about birds.  I had an uncle who we always called "Uncle Putz."   I wish some of my family members were still around so I could ask how he got that name.

As a noun: putz. A stupid fellow, a fool, a jerk; also a slang term for the penis, and for this reason, as Leo Rosten cautions in The Joys of Yiddish (1968), “Putz is not to be used lightly, or when women or children are around.”Jun 24, 2013

Common Ravens were also busy this week renovating their old nest in Green Ridge State Forest
