Hi:
I saw on the MaxScale homepage[https://mariadb.com/kb/en/maxscale/] that there are about a few versions, such as 2.4 2.5 6 23.02.
now i want to konw:
1. why are there several versions at the same time? concurrent maintenance period ?
2. what's the relationship between them?
3. and what's the difference between them ?
4. if I choose to use it, which one do ?

Hi,

Each major version is supported for four years (according to the MariaDB Engineering Policy). New major versions are done more often and the natural result of this is that there are multiple supported versions. This is similar to how the MariaDB server works as well as operating systems like Ubuntu except that MaxScale does not do "short-term" releases that have a shorter support period.

The relationship between major version is the same as most software: newer versions have improved features, work better and have (hopefully) less bugs. In general, already released versions of software only receive maintenance updates that fix bugs.

The differences between each release can generally be seen in the release notes of each major version. For example, the release notes for the first MaxScale 22.08 series release (22.08.0) lists several new features and improvements that were made.

I'd generally recommend using the newest major version. This gives you the newest features and improvements that have been added since the previous major release. It will also be supported for the longest time which means you have more time to implement future major version upgrades if you want to avoid using a version that's no longer supported.

Markus
