Crazy Elk story:

Three years ago, on May 4th, John Lyman was lying in a hospital bed in our living room. The bed faced Amy's Mountain to the South and Moore Hill to the West.

While looking outside that morning through the large picture windows, John asked me if I could see the 3 elk on Moore Hill.  I could not.

Since John was at the 'end of life,' my first reaction was that he was hallucinating. Or, as a child growing up in this valley, he hoped to see something from his childhood.

But then again, John had cataract surgery on both eyes 2 years before this. Certainly, his 76-year-old eyes were better than mine.

I voted for an 'end of life' wish on John's elk sighting, thinking nothing more about his wishful thinking elk sighting.

On May 6th, John died.

Two days later, a local came to offer their condolences, and they mentioned their own elk sighting on Moore Hill.

It appears the elk do show up in our valley in early May.

Thank you for sharing your sighting, Michael, and with pictures, too!

And, thanks for the memories.

Cindy Lyman

Thank you both for the story and photos.  Nice to see them here. Have heard them bugle in Rocky Mountains during the rut. I am actual good at the female mating call and turned a few bull heads in the Rocky Mountains!! Only the four legged ones!! This practice is not encouraging and is apparently illegal to do in Rocky Mountain National Park.
It was an awesome moment to sit in the dusk while the mating calls and responses were echoing around me!
Highly recommend the experience.  ♥️Cindy 2

Thanks for posting the photo. I've seen Elk near Rockport in the past few years, and almost tripped over a fortunately very relaxed and bedded down bull some years before that at Usal. So while presence in the watershed is not surprising it is welcome news.

I don't often drive through Petrolia to Ferndale, but on such a trip in, I came upon a small herd of beef cattle up near Spicy Breezes, looking across the road to where there were about 10-12 young elk - no horns ...some may have been young cows.  I asked around in the lower valley if anyone else had seen such a gathering, but no one had seen any - this was about 5 years ago...

I've heard stories about ranchers not liking elk, due to their trying to breed with beef cattle - the heifer suffers - is that a serious issue, or just a story?

Over the last perhaps two years I've seen a solo male elk two times on the wildcat, between Capetown and the beach. Always at night. Always fleeting such that I wasn't totally sure. But perhaps I really did see elk with this picture as vindication

Wow! Thank you for sharing the news and view of these majestic animals!

Several years ago, I was driving home on the Wildcat at night and came around a curve to see 3 bull elk with huge antlers crossing the road just in front of me. I was astonished! They easily dwarfed the car and went unhurriedly on their way.

Beautiful story, and memories Cindy! It didn't occur to me until now, but I wonder if they were the same 3 elk migrating towards Ferndale,

So glad they're returning!

Blessings Abound,
Susan
